Lew MacKenzie is a recognized Canadian following his participation as a leader on the world military and humanitarian stage in locations such as Sarajevo, Cyprus, Gaza, Cairo, Central America and Viet Nam.
Much of his military career has been documented, but there has been very little told about his racing career. Until now...
Self-financed, and worked on by a very small production team,
The General Racing has been a labour of love
and crafted on a volunteer basis to get it to this crucial point. Our
goal is to complete the project and to be able to share this
inspirational story of Lew MacKenzie and a rare intimate look into the
sport of F1600 Racing with Canadians and the world! The first step of
this is submitting the movie to numerous film festivals
internationally. Following that the focus will be to have it
available on DVD, online viewing, and ideally to be shown on a major
TV network!
To do this we need your help to afford the expenses of
the remaining project cost:
-
Final Editing
- Language Translations
- Subtitles (French)
- Music License
- Photo Rights
- Promotional Work
- DVD Production and Distribution
- Film Festival Entry Costs
-
Transportation
- Website Hosting
- Prior Editing Expenses
As experienced storytellers, we are confident with what this movie is and are excited to be able to work alongside YOU to reach our goal!
The Movie-Making Team!
Joint Media Group Inc. consists of three people -
father and son; Paul and Brendon Culliton, and our close friend Dan Heald.
This is JMGI's second full length documentary. The first movie
we made in 2010,
If I Should
Fall (trailer online), is the project that initially
connected us with Lew. The movie has been recognized and received
numerous awards for Best Documentary at international film festivals.
(Here I am, Brendon Culliton, between shots while filming at the track and having an awesome time - skateboard and everything)
When the movie is complete - The General Racing will be a fast paced 90-mininute ride, created from over 350+ hours of HD camera footage and GoPro in-car footage that was filmed along Lew and Team Mortimer. The movie takes place over five race weekends in the 2011 season at Calabogie Motor Sports, Montreal Grand Prix, Trois Rivera, ICAR Montreal, and Mount Tremblant.
Making movies and telling stories has been a passion of mine since I was 14 years old. Editing a movie alone can be a very lengthy part of process. Since we began production on The General Racing, there have been over 3000+ hours dedicated towards the editing. A challenge yes - but with patience and determination we have brought to life an engaging and exciting story that we know you will love!
(A glimpse at a small portion of the movie's timeline showing the complexity involved with the editing.)
The Racing Team!
The General Racing is a movie about going with the flow, perseverance, and team work! Meet the real life cast and the fellow members of Team Mortimer featured alongside Lew who you will get to know and love.
Lew MacKenzie: The star of the story. Lew has been fascinated with car racing ever since he was a young soldier. In fact, he joined the military so that he could afford his first car! Now, years later, he continues to live out his passion of racing alongside members of Team Mortimer. Though he may be racing against drivers who are young enough to be his grandchildren, Lew still puts up a formidable fight and proves that with age comes valuable experience.
Nigel Mortimer: Expert mechanic and driver, Nigel is the owner of Team Mortimer Racing. Having grown up around military also, Nigel shares a common thread with Lew when it comes to work ethic and attitude. Though his focus is to make sure that Lew and the others are good to go: Nigel does not shy away from getting behind the wheel and having a good time!
John Arthur: Comedic, eager, and dedicated mechanic and driver John has been learning alongside Nigel and Lew for several years as part of the team. Already an expert in many ways, John is experienced and cool under pressure when the team needs a car fixed and ready to get back on the track. Using his own car, he aims to race alongside the team, but sometimes too much eagerness can result in mistakes.
Aaron McCauley: 18-year-old rookie driver and newest member of Team Mortimer, Aaron has had plenty of previous experience behind the wheels of go-karts, but this is his first season inside of an F1600. Aaron is a quick learner with confidence and a good attitude. Lew and Nigel have plenty to teach him, but will he be ready for the unpredictable nature of racing at this level?
Wendy Mortimer: Backbone and support within Team
Mortimer, Wendy has been married to Nigel for 40 years and they have
been sharing the hobby and passion of racing for even longer! Though
often appearing off to the side, Wendy is constantly making sure that
the little things are getting done to ensure that the team is ready to race!
Rob Friesen: Mechanic and philosopher, Rob has been a valuable and dependable assist of Team Mortimer for years. He is a smiling face fully capable of taking care of the cars and there to offer some insightful perspectives about racing and life along the way.
Wayne Rostad: Order of Canada recipient, member of the Canadian Country Hall of Fame, hilarious uncle of Aaron, and more - Wayne brings plenty of energy to the adventure! Wayne is a Canadian icon and helps tell the story of Lew and Team Mortimer through his unique musical talents! > Click here to see video of Wayne back in the day!<
