Dancers Horse Rescue, Wilmore, KY, has had another unfortunate occurrence and could use some much needed help.

Native, a retired thoroughbred racehorse who was saved from a kill pen, has been with Dancers for 6 years.  Native was certainly one of the lucky horses that got saved.

A few months ago, Native stepped on a nail and became lame and could not walk. Of course, Native was given immediate attention. The vet and Farrier bill came to $500 to examine and treat him.

Since then, Native was getting better and all of a sudden he became lame in both front legs and is developing cysts.  As horses do, they generally stand up all the time and Native, with all of his horse weight, is having a very hard time healing due to his upright position which is normal for horses.  And yesterday, when he was walking, it was noticed that now his back legs are acting up - probably from not being able to put the proper weight on his front legs – now his back legs are hurting also.  We believe Native is in pain, only, as we know, animals do not let us know that very well - for they are God's voiceless favorites.

At the same time, you all know it’s that time of year – “fly time” – and all of our “fly masks” for our horses are old and torn and do not keep them free of flies. Flies bite the hoses constantly without protection and they actually tear off little pieces of skin with each bite and the horse is left with pain and small open wounds. So we are in great need at this point of about 150 fly masks for our horses to keep them safe and pain and infection free.
