I'm leaving in June to teach English in Tanzania! I've saved up $4,500 from my paychecks over the past two years and need a little help to get the last $1,000. Please consider contributing whatever you can, no matter how small!
Here's a video of me explaining in Swahili (with English subtitles) why I want to do this work. And here's a video of me giving a speech (in English) on the same topic. I've been studying Swahili for the past two years so that I can better communicate with people and understand the local culture.
More Info About These Volunteer Projects
Teaching with World Teach Tanzania
I would be teaching English at a secondary school in Tanzania through World Teach. I'd be helping fill a need for teachers who speak English fluently (most Tanzanian teachers don't) and helping students learn a language that's important for their futures. According to a friend who also taught in Tanzania, World Teach is one of the most effective volunteer-based organizations. It works with developing country governments to fill teacher shortages (so it doesn't displace local teachers) and volunteers get paid the same wages as local teachers (so it's fair).
Kenyan Violence Prevention Project (Una Hakika?)
For about a week, I'll be volunteering with a violence prevention project in Kenya. This project is a fieldproject of the The Sentinel Project for Genocide Prevention, a non-profit I'm currenlty volunteering with. I would be assisting the project, which seeks to combat incindiary rumors between two ethnic groups in the Tana Delta region, where over 150 people have been killed during 2012 and 2013. The project is called “Una Hakika?”, which means “are you sure?” in Swahili, and it seeks to get Kenyans asking this question about rumors they hear about the other ethnic group-- such as the false rumor that Pokomo nurses were poisoning Orma babies instead of vaccinating them. Kenyans will be able to text in rumors they hear and have them investigated by a local team. I've already started talking with the local team in Swahili and am excited to go join them!

Questions
What if I raise more than my goal? I will use any extra funds to stay and volunteer longer with the violence prevention project or another non-profit/volunteer-based project. I'll post updates to my blog.
How can you find out about how my work's going? Sign up to recieve my blog updates! Give me your email here and I'll send you my blogposts as I write them. (Don't be intimidated by the form set up-- all I ask for is your name and email and I'm only doing it this way to avoid a bunch of rounding-up and data entry from private messages and emails.)
