Danielle Maveal hasn't added a story.
Volunteers from a shelter I love in Florence, Alabama, kept sending me updates about a dog that had little chance to live. A pit/american bulldog mix - as sweet and mellow as can be - whithering away in their kill shelter.
He stopped eating. He was losing a lot of weight. If being a pit bull dog wasn't enough, he was now becoming so unhealthy that he would be next in line to be euthanized.
One of the volunteer's Facebook page had daily updates explaining how she visited him every day, sat with him in his cell, told him everything would be ok - she'd find a way to get him out.
I said I would take him - but only if he was good with other dogs.
Marty came up to NYC and I immediate saw he was fascinated with small dogs. I put him in foster care and warned his foster. Since then I've met with Marty and his foster and walked him with the help of a training collar and clicker training. I also finally found a trainer who would meet the foster and I out in Canarsie and work on his issues with small dogs together.
Well Marty got away from his foster - slipped out of his collar, and went after a little dog. He did a bit of damage and the little dog got him too, but thankfully they both walked away alive. As someone who has had her dog blinded by a dog attack, I am devistated for the dog owners, my foster and Marty.
Now, I must cover the little dogs vet bills and find a solution for Marty. He needs to be in boarding until I find a good, experienced foster for him – or until I can figure out another alternative.
If I can't fund boarding for Marty or find him a home right away, he'll have to be sent back down to the shelter in Alabama and most likely be put to sleep. I won't give up on him, but I can only do so much as one woman who fell in love with this big, loving face.
You might think he's a "vicious pit bull", but that's not what Marty is. He's a big snuggley dog, that loves everyone and just wants to hang out and smoke stogeys and have a whiskey before bed. Little dogs are like squirrels to him, like play things. He needs a strong hand, he is a good listener and he can be trained to resist these urges and abide by his humans commands. He just needs love, understanding, training - and some help from the friends of this one big hearted dog-lovin' dummy who thought should could do it all, and save this lug on her own.
