Cuba has a growing community of skateboarders who are talented, passionate and dedicated to the love of the sport. They rely on skateboarding not only for fun and exercise, but for self expression and creativity, which is so important, especially in a country that discourages dissent and outsider thinking. Unfortunately, skateboards are unavailable on the island due to restrictions. The only way for skateboarders to continue to practice what they love is for people to bring gear from other countries. Many skaters will screw together old broken boards and continue to skate them until they’re worn down to a nub. Toes poke through old worn-out shoes that have been ripped apart by grip tape for months. Bearings are blown, trucks are mismatched and ground down to the kingpin. They deserve better.
Your donation will go 100% towards brand new decks, shoes, trucks, wheels, bearings and hardware. I will be going with a few friends, and we will be paying for our own flights, accommodations and baggage fees. We’re not doing this to get a free vacation, all we are raising money for is gear that will be given directly to the skaters in Holguin once we get there in January. This is my 8th skate trip to Cuba, and I have trusted friends there who will make sure everything goes to those who need it and will use it. Let’s make this the best one yet, your money will directly improve the quality of life for some very deserving people and I promise you they will appreciate it greatly.
