Like many Puerto Ricans, the recent devastation caused by hurricane Fiona has affected me to the core. Learning about the scale of destruction caused by nature and the suffering exacerbated by a web of bureaucracy has left our families in peril. Our governments learned little in the five years from the anniversary of Maria, and again we all suffer the policies that treat our people as second-class citizens. While the hurricane is a natural disaster, the growing humanitarian crisis is purely man-made.
Today, regardless of what's discussed in the news, the vast majority of people on the west side of the Island continue without access to power and potable water. Some communities are still stranded, unable to obtain food, gas or medical care. Communication and critical infrastructure remain compromised Islandwide. FEMA's response has yet again been lacklustre, despite assurances to the contrary or promises made publicly. To date, there's hardly any government or non-profit support deployed on the west side, offering warm meals, potable water or medical care.
While Puerto Ricans have shown tenacity and resilience, this doesn't mean they should, yet again, go at it alone. I urge you to join me in amplifying their voice by publicly advocating for the everyday citizens, as their local government has abandoned them. With time, I hope we can hold accountable those who've received billions in funding to avoid disasters like this.
What we plan to do with the money:
The funds raised through this effort will be personally provided to San Germán families and support them with purchasing small power generators or providing them with cash to buy gas.
