Unkle Frank hasn't added a story.
I relocated to Puerto Rico from Austin, TX very recently. I moved to reconnect with the island where I was born, to do some healing, and to slow the pace of my life down for a little while, after years of social justice activism combined with full time work in veterinary medicine and animal rescue in Austin.
I've only been on the island for a very short time, but I have already seen literally dozens of stray dogs, commonly known as "Satos" running the streets, as well as several stray and feral cats. From what can tell they are ALL unsterilized, mostly very thin, riddled with parasites, eye infections, skin infections, and wounds. Despite all of that, the vast majority of them are actually really friendly, and I've made some four-legged friends.
I've asked a couple of my neighbors and the consensus from them seems to be that the animals are unclaimed; abandoned on the beach however long ago, or born on the streets and surviving off scraps since.
I'm personally living off of my meager savings over the next month or so until I find part-time work, which will in turn help me to pay my bills, pay off a few debts, and feed myself while I'm here. I cannot afford to subsidize care for these guys myself, but I'm having a really hard time just sitting by while they go uncared for.
I've worked in animal welfare for a really long time and I know how much very basic care can do to improve the quality of life of an animal.
SO!
I'm reaching out!
There is a veterinary clinic up the street from my house that will provide low cost sterilization, standard vaccinations, and anti-parasitics for them if I can get them there.
I've been quoted:
-$100.00 = All of the above for cats
-$120.00-160.00 = All of the above for dogs (based on their weight)
And the vet will be able to provide meds to treat any of the variety of other ailments I've noticed without a secondary exam fee.
I'm not yet working, and when I do it will be on a part-time basis (again, I'm taking some time to heal my body and my mind), so I have plenty of time to invest in making this happen. I'm going to be finding out from my neighbors where would be an appropriate spot for me to set up a dedicated feeding areas for them as well, and I would like to get collars on all of the dogs.
I also need to secure a cat trap for the feral kitties.
Eventually, and if the response to this campaign proves promising, would like to incorporate into a non-profit for tax and transparency purposes, and I have already been directed towards an attorney who can walk me through that process here.
In the interrim, and while I'm getting started, I'll be making a Facebook page, Satos N' Gatos, Luquillo, to upload pics and stories of the animals helped.
Help me help them!
