Teresa Stafford hasn't added a story.
Jake Stafford is 22. He lives in Devon, England. He has recently been diagnosed with Fibrolamellar Hepatocellular Carcinoma. It is a very rare form of Primary Liver Cancer which typically affects young people. There are only 200 cases per year worldwide. This translates to a 1 in 5,000,000 chance of getting this form of cancer. The only way to remove it is by surgery. Liver resection is very risky where approx 2% of patients do not make it through the operation. Currently there is no cure for this disease. The majority of patients have no symptoms until the disease is very advanced. Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy are ineffective against this form of cancer. The recurrence rate is extremely high, so the majority of those affected will go on to have further surgeries. The survival rate after 5 years is roughly 20% - 30% of patients. Jake had his surgery on the 7th May 2014.
The United States are currrently leading the fight against this disease. We are hoping to raise enough money to initially purchase a wheelchair and then to enable Jake to visit specialist doctors and researchers in the USA. We are also hoping to set up a support group to help other families who find themselves facing this awful journey. If you could donate even just a small amount, we would be very grateful.
There is very limited information available regarding this illness so Jake decided he wanted to help in any way he could. He has created a facebook page to try to help raise the profile of this nasty disease, Jake Stafford Fibrolamellar HCC Cancer, please like and share the page to help Jake's cause.
Thank you.
