We don't believe in adding to the pet overpopulation problem by breeding more dogs. There are too many dogs that are perfect for this work sitting in shelters until they are eventually put down due to lack of space. We believe in these pound pups and they need you to believe in them too.
To date we have rescued, trained, and placed over 250 dogs. That is 500 less dogs that were euthanized. For every 1 dog that we rescue, it makes room in a shelter for another. Many of our clients state that the service dog we provided them has "saved their lives" and/or "changed their lives". These are dogs that were abandoned, neglected, and passed over by potential adopters. We gave these dogs another chance and they in turn gave their new owners a new life.
We are ready to take these programs to their full potential. Our goal is to procure a large, fully functional facility that will: house our dogs during the training and rehabilitation stages, provide indoor/outdoor training areas for our trainers to work with the dogs and our clients to train with their dogs, an office building for our equipment, supplies, volunteer/staff offices, a filing room for all our clients files, a classroom for our clients initial training, a building of efficiencies where our clients can come and stay on the property, and a small mobile or manufactured home for our main trainer to stay on property to care for and train the dogs daily. We will need a minimum of 5 to 10 acres and buildings to put on the property in order to accomplish this goal.
If we reach our goal, we can begin by rescuing 30 dogs per month, per program (Paws for Veterans and PSD Registry & Academy). The total is 60 dogs per month being rescued from Brevard County kill shelters and making room for another 60 dogs. That is a total of 120 dogs per month in Brevard County that will not be put down due to lack of adopters, fosters, or space. As we grow, so will those numbers.
Paws for Veterans was established in 2010 and PSD Registry & Academy was established in January of 2011. PSD Registry & Academy just began providing free service dogs to disabled civilians 2 months ago and have already been asked to present to organizations like “The International Bi-Polar Foundation”, medical professionals, Veterans organizations, and have had over 100 applicants already. Unfortunately, due to the lack of foster homes or a facility, we have been unable to help all our approved applicants. Paws for Veterans has also had to put a hold on applications due to a lack of foster homes and facility.
There are people out there that need these dogs desperately and would love them forever and unconditionally. It is our goal to make sure that these shelter dogs are saved, given another chance at life, and put in a loving home with a new purpose. The added benefit is that they are providing a needed service to disabled Americans. As much as we have tried, we have been unsuccessful at finding businesses that will sponsor our programs, grants, grant writers, etc.
My name is Crystal Callahan Ayala. I am the owner and lead trainer of both Paws for Veterans and PSD Registry & Academy. I run these programs because I have first-hand experience with PTSD, like many of our clients. I trained my first dog in 1994 and have trained thousands since. I run both of these programs almost single handedly with a little help from my main trainer and a few volunteers that help me plan small fundraisers to fund these programs. We believe in our program, mission, and shelter dogs. Please consider helping us help them in any way that you can. Thank you for your time.
