Meet the Artists
Shap has been applying for and receiving art grants for over a decade, mostly for San Diego's YOUtopia and Santa Cruz's unSCruz events. He gifts gourmet cheese and enjoys making generative arts projects. Manny is a loyal campmate and co-lead artist. It has dutifully pointed the way to camp during setup many years and carries Personal Space when on display. Manny dislikes wind, rain, and mud, and now demands a better tripod and tools for staking down.
Personal Space
Personal Space is a performance art piece, a 7+ foot wide hoop encircled by the words 'PERSONAL SPACE', worn around me and carried around a festival venue. All inquiries about entering the space are met with polite refusal, and anything offered to the Wearer is declined as that would be breaching the Personal Space. Personal Space went through a few revisions between 2017 and 2019 but was dismantled in 2020 when a global pandemic drastically changed the project's possible reception.
Reception has been amazing, drawing from the crowd echoes of the phrase, laughter, pointing, and sometimes intense one-on-one interactions. Yes, this Personal Space is too large, but that is only a surface-level reflection... What size would your Personal Space be? What size would someone else assign to you, and what do you assign to others? Culture, gender, familiarity, size, all of these (and others) affect these invisible boundaries we create as well as how we choose to invade them.
Seven years later... I'm back with updated design plans and excitement to build Personal Space v4!
