My uncle, Douglas is in his late 70s. He lives a very quiet, simple life in a remote part of Ireland. It's also a lonely life. His greatest joy has been to make occasional visits to South Africa to see his daughter and grandson. I try to stay in touch (I live in the UK) and I know he can get quite depressed. But things have gotten much worse. He was recently defrauded of around 11,000 euros, most of his life savings, in the broker scam run by 27ProQuote (a/k/a ProQuote27).

This particular scam has defrauded many victims of probably several million euros. It can happen to the best of us, they are very skilled operators, and once they are found out, they shut down and simply start up another 'brokerage' and defraud others.

Douglas has contacted all the relevant authorities, including the police, but in these cases with offshore 'brokers', the chances of getting his money back are slim. 27ProQuote is not the only fraudulent off-shore enterprise doing this.

He can live off his pension, so he's not destitute, he can buy groceries and so on, but there's nothing at all for emergencies, car repairs, repairs to his house for example, and certainly nothing to visit family, including me, here in the UK.

Douglas would never ask anyone for money, and has not done so. He would not do so. He did not ask me to help him in any way at all, certainly not fundraise for him.

But when I heard what happened I felt so helpless and sad. I could tell that he feels close to giving up. It's terrible to think that this wonderful man is going through this ordeal, especially during these dreadful times with coronavirus, especially when he also has health conditions causing him physical suffering. I know what this is like, I myself have a chronic health condition, and it makes life very constrained. So for Douglas to have this additional worry, this additional limitation on his life, and at his age when he should be able to relax, is just so awful for me to countenance.

I'm hoping to raise just a little towards what he's lost. I want him to know he's loved and supported. I want him to know he is a part of a community of people that cares, and not alone. Loneliness is a terrible thing. It can be deadly. My mother ( his older sister) deteriorated rapidly in the last years of her life due to isolation.

I don't know what we can raise, but I've set the goal for 3,000 euros. Whatever we raise will make a difference, and at the very least lift his spirits, knowing that we care. If we can raise more, wouldn't that be amazing!
