After everything this family has done through to finally secure a home that is in good structural condition and completing all major structural repairs using their own funds and crowdfunding, they have been slapped with a huge, erroneous, and unappealable tax bill by the city of Endicott. If this bill is not paid by the end of March, the family will lose their home and be homeless. They are the end of their resources. This house was supposed to provide them with security and this bill is most unfair thing to hit them in a very, very long list of unfair things.

This feels like reaching the final circle of hell for them. All major issues with the house have been dealt with and they can focus on building a maintenance and tax fund to ensure it will remain in good repair and their home for life. Everyone in the house who can work works. They should be able to make it on their own from this point forward if we can just get this bill paid.

Moreover, Bast, the new matriarch of the family, has just had some major news that is both devastating and a relief. After years of increasingly deteriorating health, she finally has a healthcare team on her side that has figured out what's wrong -- she has cerebral palsy. She is never going to be able to go back to work in any sort of meaningful way. So now begins a fight for the disability payments that she paid into all those years ago. We know it's going to be a really hard fight and are braced for rejections. But it's a worthwhile effort in that gaining these benefits will help her gain that measure of financial independence she gave up a decade ago when she stopped working to take care of her ailing mother.

The family's immediate community of friends is tapped out at this point. So we are reaching out to our own communities to support us if they do not want to support this family. Because the fact is that I will not let them lose this house, even if I have to endure financial hardship myself. But imagine if we could spread that burden out beyond their immediate community.
