My name is Mary Allegra, Associate Professor at University of Carabobo in Valencia, Venezuela. My presentation has been accepted to participate as a speaker at TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Speakers) International Convention in Chicago, March 2018. As the international community may know, the political, economical and social crisis in Venezuela is affecting all the population including professionals. Professors do not escape from this reality.
The inflation rate is above 800 % through October. Next year, consumer prices are forecast by the International Monetary Fund to soar more than 2,300 %. See article at: In a Venezuela Ravaged by Inflation, ‘a Race for Survival’ Therefore, we are resilient in order to find ways to improve our professional development. It is impossible for any Venezuelan to have access to any foreign currency. Apart from this, the wage for a university professor in Venezuela is almost equivalent to the minimum wage in Venezuela, which is around $4.10 per month.
Besides, public universities like mine do not have budget to finance this kind of academic professional event. See article: Venezuela's Universities Feel the Sting of Economic and Political Crisis.
For all these reasons, it is inviable for me or any other Venezuelan to pay the expenses for this trip to Chicago and represent my country, Venezuela, in such a prestigious academic event. I submitted a proposal for presenting in the most prestigious international association of English teachers in the world called TESOL.
My proposal have been chosen and I have been invited to participate in the 52nd International TESOL International Convention which will take place in Chigaco, Illlinois, starting March 27 to 30th, 2018 ( ) to contribute with a presentation about optimizing formative assessment in English language teaching through a technological tool called “Plickers”. Besides, I have other two presentations with some other Venezuelan colleagues.
Detailed travel costs:
1) Registration Fee as a TESOL Global member $330 (before February 1st, 2018). See Registration Rates:
2) Membership: $30
3) Air ticket Caracas-Chicago-Caracas approx. $700 (the price is fluctuating)
4) Lodging in Chicago approximately $700 (the price is fluctuating)
5) Meals and transportation $300
I would need at least to collect $360 for the registration and membership fees by the end of January and the rest in February to pay the flying ticket and a hotel room. I know I can make it with the help of all of you!
I would really appreciate all your contributions to help me attend TESOL International Convention 2018, share my knowledge and represent my country in such an important conference of English teachers in the world. I promise to thank all donors after my presentation. Their names will be in my presentation and I will record a video where I would read the names of all of them. The video thanking you all will be publicly published and could be seen by anyone. Finally, I promise  that for every $10 I receive, I'll pay a meal to an underserved Venezuelan kid, who are  currently starving in my country. I will make these donations public. Our children will really appreciate your contribution.
Thank you in advance,
Prof. Mary Allegra
