Coming Back Home Despite the Challenges

For a while, I had to leave Lebanon because the recent wars made life too dangerous and uncertain. We’ve suffered two short but devastating conflicts that cost the lives of dear friends, caused economic instability, and left our infrastructure crumbling. The cost of living has soared, and every day feels like picking up pieces from a life that’s been shattered. Despite all this, I chose to come back to my hometown because this is where I belong, even though life here is full of challenges, from relentless power outages to the struggle of finding work.

The Daily Struggle

I’m still searching for a job, but age discrimination keeps closing doors. Meanwhile, my health has taken a hit with issues. The project I run, XeroLinux, brings in a little every month, which helps but is far from enough. Between hosting, internet, phone bills, medical expenses, and electricity, I’m barely breaking even. Unlike many countries, Lebanon offers no unemployment support; no job means no income. I’m lucky to be exempt from rent, but even so, every penny I earn goes toward survival.

Finding Success and Community Through XeroLinux

Despite these challenges, I’ve found some small successes within the Linux community. My XeroLinux project has not only helped me expand my technical skills but also introduced me to new friends and supporters from around the world. Building this Linux distribution and engaging with users has given me a sense of purpose and connection, reminding me that even in tough times, creativity and community can thrive. This project is more than just software—it’s a lifeline and a way to share a part of Lebanon with others.
