I will bike with my UWC friends from Europe to China, May 23-Aug 23, interview the local people, and tell the stories through blogs to encourage curiosity and understanding between people, across the boundaries of language, culture, and nationality.

I’m Jerry from China, a second-year student at United World College in Mostar (UWCiM). When I was a little boy, my mother was telling me the story of Zhang Qian (the Chinese Marco Polo), how he trekked through the desert and found the Silk Road to the West. Since then I could even hear the of camel’s bells ringing in my dream: I want to follow his adventure one day!

This summer, I will make my dream come true. I will cycle along the Silk Road from Bosnia back home to China with my UWC friends, passing 7624 km&11 countries in 92 days, making us the YOUNGEST team in human history to bike from Europe to China.

AND the project is not just biking, we want to present the stories of the people on the Silk Road. In the age of growing protectionism and xenophobia, we might have some vague images about these countries in the Middle East and Middle Asia, some even with hostility. However, we might have different religion and culture, but we envision the same -to CHANGE- to live a better life in peace and prosperity. We want to interview the locals and tell their personal stories to the world, in the theme of CHANGE, and reflect the bigger society behind the individuals. For instance, we will approach Bosnia i Herzegovina and Serbia in the context of the Breakup of Yugoslavia: how this societal change has shaped the mentality of the people, and how this has influenced the their attitude to seek change in the society today.

By following this project, our audience can know how the locals live their life and how they see the changes in their societies. Their original unfamiliarity can be turned into curiosity. As more people understand the grass root people of these countries, the foundation for future learning and cooperation is laid.

We plan the trip into 6 parts by their geographical conditions, and I will be with my UWC teammate in part 2-6:

1 Mostar Bosnia > Istanbul Turkey 1306 km | May 23 - Jun 5

2 Istanbul Turkey > Tbilisi Georgia 1739.7 km | Jun 6 - Jun 24

3 Tbilisi Georgia > Tehran Iran 1154 km | Jun 25 - Jul 8

4 Tehran Iran > Mashhad Iran 888 km | Jul 9 - Jul 21

5 Mashhad Iran > Samarkand Uzbekistan 998 km | Jul 22 - Aug 4

6 Samarkand Uzbekistan > Horgos China 1539.2 km | Aug 5 - Aug 23

In each part we also give 2 days for flexibility in case of unexpected situation. In the cities we plan to stay for 3-5 days to conduct our interview and rest.
