Two years ago, Lindsey and I bought 12 acres of unlogged, unfarmed
land in the Driftless region of Wisconsin. My not-so-secret hope was
that by the time I turned 50 we’d have it set up as the refuge we
envisioned for ourselves and other artists and thinkers needing time
and space to rest, read, create, and spend hours staring at the sky
and communing with the trees. But broccoli now costs approximately
$100 a pound, rent is sure not going down, and dental work is
expensive as all get-out.
Right now, we’re just looking at gorgeous wide open space and a
lot of incredible trees, but our great big grand vision goes like: a
camper as soon as we can, then a small cabin, then a bigger cabin and
a work-live studio where artists can stay, rejuvenate, and create.
Our super baseline goal by the end of June when I cross that
half-century mark is to (drumroll please) get electricity
run onto the property. The dream? Electricity, a gravel pad, a camper,
and wi-fi.
Estimated cost for running the electricity and installing the
breaker box is $4,500.
We’re looking at $3,500 to level and lay down the gravel pad
where our camper will eventually live. And $12,000 for a substantial
down payment on the camper.
Don’t you worry, we have spreadsheets galore with all the other
various and sundry land-related expenses like insurance and water and
septic and all that, but these lead the list.

Lindsey Dorr-Niro
is a cross-disciplinary visual artist, arts educator, and
Indo-Tibetan Buddhist scholar/teacher. In addition to having an MFA
in painting from Yale, she has completed advanced studies in
Indo-Tibetan yoga and meditation, including teacher training through
the Yoga Studies Institute, which emphasizes the philosophical,
psychological, and meditative practices of yoga. She recently
received a grant from The Hemera Foundation to deepen her study of
somatic meditation with the Dharma Ocean lineage.
