Hello! I am a proud daughter of a hardworking American father. As a child, my father spent time away from his family to work a dangerous trucking job. I never saw him much, but when he had a chance to come home, I was so happy. Now that he has stopped trucking, I have a chance to finally get to know him, however, my time with him is very short. His life is threatened with every beat of his heart, and life imprisonment, for unpaid taxes, is at the door. I’m now worried that I won’t get the chance to get to know my dad like I’ve always wanted.
The American dream is a wonderful idea that inspires hope to people, of all races, around the world. It is a vision that millions of people, through hundreds of years, have stood proudly and, readily, given up their lives for. This dream entails a wonderful vision of peace, freedom, a good paying job, a beautiful home to call your own, a nice car, and a happy, well fed, family. For some, this is a marvelous reality. For others, it is just that, an American dream; a dream that seems so close at hand, but somehow keeps out of reach of the average working man.
Mr. David Silva is my father. He has served American transportation, in the truck driving business, for twenty long and harsh years. He has sacrificed sleep, time with his family, and his own health in order to support his family. For those twenty long years, he has always done his best to provide for us, pay the bills and keep his taxes paid on time, while juggling the responsibility of being the best father that he could. Now, at the age of 58, instead of retiring from a long life of hard work, he is deathly ill, with a mountain of blood clots in his leg, in great financial distress, and deeply indebted to the IRS, for a fault that is not his own.
Today he faces imminent threat of a brain aneurism, or pulmonary embolism, with every beat of his heart, and the prospect of spending the rest of his life in prison for unpaid taxes. Because of his debt to the IRS, he is unable to get the medical attention that he needs, and he does not qualify for Medicaid. There was a mix up at the Tax advisor’s office, and the secretary ended up losing some important tax documents that put him behind, thousands of dollars, in taxes. By the end of 2016 his debts will be bumped up to approximately 50,000 dollars. If he is unable to pay this whopping debt soon, he could be imprisoned.
He now spends his days going to school full time and working a part time job. My mother works, needle work, for as much money as she can, but it all just isn’t enough. I am currently, handicapped with two broken feet, and unable to help out myself. I am sad and worried that he will be taken from me again, this time for good, but I still hold my head up high in faith that something will work out soon.
He needs your help! No one deserves to work their whole life, then die in jail, or of a terrible blood clot, and every child should have the chance to know their father. My younger brother currently serves in the Marines and is stationed in California, unable to leave duty to visit his father, at the moment, and might not ever get a chance to see him again if things stay the way that they are. Just a dollar from 50,000 people could literally save my father’s life!
I firmly believe in God's power and His miracles! Even though things seem so bleak, I know that there is always hope. If you are unable to donate, please pray. The American dream seems to be out of reach for my family and I right now, however, I intend to be brave and to keep believing in the goodness and the integrity of America and the wonderful freedom that so many have died for. Have a good day and God Bless!
