The Goal

On January 10, 2026, we are organizing a Grand Sabar des Anciens in Geule Tapée (Dakar) to preserve and pass on the traditional Sabar dance and drumming of Senegal.
There are no formal schools to learn this traditional art — the only way to preserve it is through direct transmission from the elders to the young, from mouth to mouth, drum to drum, and step to step.
That is why experienced drummers and dancers will show the younger generation how to play and perform the traditional Sabar, as many young people no longer know the original rhythms and movements.

💡 Why It Matters

Sabar is more than music and dance – it is the heartbeat of Senegalese identity.
The art is traditionally passed down orally and physically, through observation, participation, and community.
Many great masters have dedicated their lives to Sabar; without opportunities like this to share their knowledge, the connection between generations risks being lost.
This Grand Sabar will be a bridge between generations and a celebration of living culture in motion.
