Is EcoFertilys already operational with products for sale?

Urine-based fertilizers are not currently marketed. We are in the research and development phase for the appropriate formula (March 2024). It should also be noted that EcoFertilys is not a legal entity at the moment, but the name of the research project.

Who manages the project and how do you finance it?

We are 2 private investors, 1 volunteer ambassador, 1 researcher, and 1 project assistant, all from Madagascar. The entire research and development phase of the fertilizer formula is currently self-funded. However, we will very quickly seek additional financing from donors, private individuals, etc., to accelerate the creation of a modern and standard-compliant laboratory.

What is the bacteriological nitrification of urine to transform it into concentrated fertilizer?

To simplify the explanations, urine is already a natural fertilizer at its core, for instance, with lisain (stored urine to reduce the presence of pathogens) since antiquity. However, it is possible to have a more concentrated and much richer fertilizer with nitrification. The process involves selecting a mix of specific bacteria, which will convert ammonia into nitrites and nitrites into nitrates (ideal for plants). All this while creating an environment conducive to their development (control of pH and temperature, addition of micronutrients, controlled oxygenation, etc.) in order to have the most effective product possible.

Why was urine selected as the raw material for an organic fertilizer?

First of all, human urine is a rich source of essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, key elements that promote plant growth. By recycling this human waste, available in large, renewable, and unlimited quantities, we transform a product often considered undesirable into a valuable resource for sustainable agriculture. By converting urine into a nitrified fertilizer, we improve its stability, reduce risks related to odors, and, most importantly, increase its agronomic effectiveness. Nitrification ensures that the nutrients present in the urine are available in a form that plants can easily absorb, thereby promoting healthy and sustainable growth. Opting for urine as a raw material and proceeding with its nitrification represents a more environmentally friendly approach.

In what form will the EcoFertilys urine-based fertilizer be presented?

Although other treatment possibilities already exist, with nitrification, the logic at launch is to maintain the enriched and concentrated liquid form. It should be remembered that urine in its state as organic waste is already a fertilizer, but without nitrification, it would cause a logistical problem, as it contains about 95% water, which would mean moving millions of liters of liquid for a limited agricultural impact. However, studies are also underway for a solid form based on a plant substrate.

Is this nitrification process being studied in other countries?

The environmental issue is global. Europe, North America, Asia have conducted advanced research on nitrified urine, as has NASA, for that matter. All scientists share this vision: exploring and optimizing the fertilizing properties of nitrified urine represents a crucial and global approach to promoting more sustainable agricultural practices, contributing to global food security, and addressing current environmental challenges.

How will you collect the urine?

We are developing a plan to collect urine using dry toilets, more precisely waterless urinals, for both women and men. The idea is to have a product free from fecal matter, significantly reducing the health risk. An initial collection network in the private sector, schools, institutions, NGOs should quickly emerge, before democratizing the concept in neighborhoods lacking sanitation facilities.

Could the use of nitrified urine-based fertilizer pose a health risk?

Various international studies do not demonstrate any major risks, but quite the contrary, a real alternative to chemical fertilizers. It should also be noted that once the urine is nitrified and filtered (activated carbon), we can perform a second treatment, but this would impact the production cost (pasteurization, distillation, etc.). Everything will depend on the results obtained from the research and development phase launched in March 2024.

How much will the nitrified urine-based natural fertilizer cost in Madagascar?

The calculations will be linked to the amortization of the research and development phase, as well as depending on the various financings that could be granted to us, whether it be for collection or transformation. However, this project would not make sense if we did not offer the most accessible rate possible, to change farmers' habits.

In your business model, do you plan to export the EcoFertilys fertilizer?

Exportation is not planned initially. Our goal is to focus on Madagascar. However, should opportunities arise with importing countries, we are open to considering them, without ever neglecting our local ambitions

Nous sommes 2 investisseurs privés, 1 ambassadeur bénévole, 1 chercheuse, 1 assistante projet, tous originaires de Madagascar. Toute la phase de recherche et développement de la formule d'engrais est actuellement financée en fonds propres. Mais nous allons très rapidement chercher des compléments de financements auprès des bailleurs, de privés, etc, pour accélérer la création d'un laboratoire moderne et aux normes.

Qu'est-ce que la nitrification bactériologique de l'urine pour la transformer en engrais concentré ?

Pour simplifier les explications, l'urine est déjà un engrais naturel à la base, par exemple avec le lisain (Urine stockée pour réduire la présence de pathogènes) depuis l'antiquité. Cependant il est possible d'avoir un engrais plus concentré et beaucoup plus riches avec la nitrification. Le procédé consiste à sélectionner un mélange de bactéries spécifiques, qui vont transformer l'ammoniac en nitrites et les nitrites en nitrate (idéal pour les plantes). Le tout en créant un milieu favorable à leur développement (contrôle PH et température, ajout de micronutriments, oxygénation contrôlée, etc.) afin d'avoir le produit le plus efficace possible.

Tout d'abord, l'urine humaine est une source riche en nutriments essentiels tels que l'azote, le phosphore et le potassium, éléments clés favorisant la croissance des plantes. En recyclant ce déchet humain, disponible en quantité, renouvelable et illimité, nous transformons un produit souvent considéré comme indésirable en une ressource précieuse pour l'agriculture durable. En convertissant l'urine en un engrais nitrifié, nous améliorons sa stabilité, réduisons les risques liés aux odeurs, et surtout, nous augmentons son efficacité agronomique. Sous quelle forme se présentera l'engrais à base d'urine EcoFertilys ?

Bien que d'autres possibilités de traitements existent déjà, avec la nitrification la logique au lancement est de respecter la forme liquide enrichie et concentrée. Rappelons que l'urine dans son état de déchet organique est déjà un engrais, mais sans la nitrifier, cela causerait un problème logistique, car elle contient environ 95% d'eau, ce qui reviendrait à déplacer des millions de litre de liquide pour un impact agricole limité. Des études sont cependant en cours également pour une forme solide sur la base d'un substrat végétal.

Tous les scientifiques partagent cette vision : l'exploration et l'optimisation des propriétés fertilisantes de l'urine nitrifiée représentent une démarche cruciale et globale en vue de promouvoir des pratiques agricoles plus durables, de contribuer à la sécurité alimentaire mondiale et de répondre aux défis environnementaux actuels.

Comment allez-vous collecter l'urine ?

Nous mettons en place une réflexion pour collecter l'urine avec des toilettes sèches, plus précisément des urinoirs sans eau, à destination des femmes et des hommes. L'idée est d'avoir un produit exempt de matières fécales, réduisant de façon considérable le risque sanitaire. Un premier réseau de collecte au niveau du secteur privé, des écoles, des institutions, des ONG, devrait rapidement voir le jour, avant de démocratiser le concept dans les quartiers en manque de sanitaires.

Est-ce que l'utilisation de l'engrais à base d'urine nitrifiée pourrait représenter un risque sanitaire ?

Les différentes études internationales ne démontrent pas de risques majeurs, mais bien au contraire une vraie alternative aux engrais chimiques. À noter également qu'une fois l'urine nitrifiée et filtrée (charbon actif), nous pouvons effectuer un deuxième traitement, mais qui impacterait le coût de production (pasteurisation, distillation, etc.). Tout dépendra des résultats obtenus de la phase de recherche et développement lancée en mars 2024.

Combien va coûter l'engrais naturel à base d'urine nitrifiée à Madagascar ?

Les calculs seront liés à l'amortissement de la phase de recherche et développement, ainsi que fonction des financements divers qui pourraient nous être octroyés, que cela soit pour la collecte ou la transformation. Cependant, ce projet n'aurait de sens si nous n'offrions pas le tarif le plus accessible possible, pour un changement d'habitude des agriculteurs.

Dans votre modèle économique, comptez-vous exporter l'engrais EcoFertilys ?

L'exportation n'est pas prévue dans un premier temps. Notre objectif est de nous concentrer sur Madagascar. Cependant, si des opportunités venaient à se présenter avec des pays importateurs, nous sommes ouverts à l'envisager, sans jamais délaisser nos ambitions locales.
