David Cater hasn't added a story.

In Nature, disruption creates opportunity.
We’re part of nature. So here’s an opportunity.

Hurricane Nicholas downed thousands of big trees in Southern Brazoria County in September 2021, just 3-1/2 months ago. It was a big deal. This is where my farm and nursery are, The Utility Research Garden. Trees were down everywhere, blocking driveways, roads, some fell on houses.
I split my time between Brazoria County and Deep East Texas where we are already harvesting dozens of big trees each year to be milled on our small bandsaw mill. Five big trees were struck by lightning in 2021 on our property, a hickory, a white oak, two pines (one lightning strike), a swamp chestnut oak, and a massive Beech fell down under its own weight, kind of like democracy in America.
I’ve spent my adult life trying to do work that I love, doing work (slightly) outside the mainstream corporate culture, trying to find an entrepreneurial path that keeps me and a few others gainfully employed without being egregious exploiters. I would say it's the primary work of my life.

This "All Trees Fall Down-Sawmill Project" is the next venture.

You can take part.

And benefit directly (or indirectly for free).

I am raising $63,000 for two Sawmills to mill fallen trees from Southeast Texas.

You contribute funds, and get double what you pay-in, in beautiful sawn lumber!

A few details - Bullet Points w/o the Bullets

  • Purchase a new Mahoe Mini-Max sawmill produced from New Zealand $45,000.
  • Purchase a used Peterson Super Slabber sawmill thats cuts slabs and trunks up to 72” wide, $18,200.
  • In return for your investment, there are 4 options:
    1. YOU HAVE A WOOD PROJECT: I will repay you double / twice / 200% the amount of your investment in sawn dimensional lumber, or live edge slabs, table tops, as seen in some of the photos.
Example - You give $1,000 toward the project and I will repay you $2,000 worth of hardwood lumber.
    2. PLANT A FOREST: For every $50 donated, we will plant a tree, or give a baby tree back to you.
    3. BECAUSE YOU CARE: Donation only. You love the idea but don't need wood or baby trees.
    4. SPREAD THE LOVE: Donate your wood or baby trees to a Non-Profit of your choosing.
*We've already harvested hundreds of large and some massive trunks of Pecan, Red Oak, American Elm, White Oak, Persimmon, Walnut, Cypress, Red Cedar, Pine, Live Oak, Soapberry, Sycamore, Cedar Elm, and a few other species (photos attached), and I've done this mostly as a service to my community (with the logs as a return)
-We own tractors for carrying massive logs
-We own multiple trailers for transporting logs and lumber
-We own multiple trucks for hauling equipment and logs
-We have a pond to store hundreds of logs where they will be stored before milling (this preserves the wood from rot)
-We already own several buildings where cut timber and logs can be processed and stored to dry
-We are providing a use for wood, for trees that are 50, 90, 200 year old trees that would otherwise become mulch or burned, releasing all that stored carbon into the atmosphere.
-This project will provide good employment for a couple of people for a year or more (most likely into the future).
-And maybe most importantly, this FundRazr can get you beautiful slabs and building materials for your future projects for a really great price, and cause.

A few more details...  on trees and planting and future harvests

In addition to sawmills and harvests of fallen trees, I own and run a nursery, the Utility Research Garden.
We don’t grow little kids (not that kind of nursery), but we do grow big kids and bamboo, and as it turns out, trees, lots of trees.
As I type this we have several thousand trees that came from collected seed, from acorns, from cones and from cuttings that we've made over the past several years. I didn’t have a plan for these trees when I started growing them except to plant them on our two farms. But it turns out that several thousand trees is more trees than even 104 acres can take, especially when that 104 acres already has some established forest, a functioning nursery, three ponds, a vineyard and more.
Therefore, included in the harvest of the fallen trees is the planting of new trees for neighbors and friends who have lost trees (we are donating several hundred trees in the town of Jones Creek where the Hurricane hit). We plant trees both with the goal of having trees to enjoy (the shade, the clean air, the habitat it creates), as well as to harvest 20, 50, 100 years from now, when they too fall down, an integral part of this sawmill project. Hand in hand. They go together. We can’t do one w/o the other. Wax on. Wax off.
