This is the tale of two homeless doggies; Hambone and Sweet Pea.

Sweet as could be but with no one to love, these two angels arrived at the shelter sad, scared and unfortunately, very sick.

Hambone (a.k.a. Hammy) arrived weeks before Sweet Pea. Soon after intake, Hammy was diagnosed with an advanced stage of heartworm. On top of his heartworm, this poor guy had the worrisome signs of something potentially worse going on such as neurological trouble.

Sweet Pea arrived at the shelter with a prolapsed uterus, a life threatening condition that required immediate veterinary care.

With limited resources to provide care for the thousands of animals they see every year, open admissions municipal shelters like SBACC need to make difficult decisions with cases like Hammy and Sweet Pea. That’s where CARE of South Bend comes in.

Recognizing how special these two babies were, CARE committed to covering the cost of their care.

Weeks have now passed for these two and they have both had a series of victories and setbacks.

Sweet pea survived her emergency surgery and her spay to later go on to develop Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA). Hammy survived his heartworm treatment, his neuter and his eye ulcer to later go on to develop a life threatening respiratory infection. Through it all, with their tails wagging, these two have remained gentle, kind and loving little souls.

This is where we need your help.

Although they are not out of the woods yet, these 2 angels are now on solid ground and are expected to make full recoveries. However, getting them to this point has not been cheap! CARE has accumulated close to $2,000 in medical bills so far for these babies.

While some say that’s a lot of money to save two homeless brown dogs, we believe these two sweethearts deserve a second chance. Can you help us with the cost of their care?
