In September of last year, our mom and pop production company
completed its first ever narrative short, "The Case of
Evil." Produced on a shoestring budget, shot in three days, and
featuring an Internet-connected orchestra scattered over the globe,
it's been very well received at festivals both in the U.S. and
abroad. Just a month after premiering, it swept the horror / sci fi /
action category at the San Diego Fall Film Festival and picked up 1st
Place Awards from both the judges and the attending audience. Our lead
Merrick McCartha won a "Best Actor" award at a Hollywood
festival in August. In total, we've been named an Official Selection
for 28 different film festivals, which is an astronomical number for a
first-time film.
As great as these awards and selections have been, our ultimate goal is to get the film on to a commercial platform where it can create revenue for our fledgling company, and where it can be seen by a large audience. To achieve that, we need to be able to meet with the potential commercial distributors and investors who attend film festival screenings. These events are also important because they put all our hard work in front of casting directors, big-name studio producers, and others who are in a position to provide paying opportunities for our cast and our crew.
Risks
There are, of course, no guarantees that anyone will choose to distribute us even after seeing the film or meeting with us, but chances are greatly increased in face-to-face meetings. Further, personal appearances of producers or directors at a festival helps heighten the public's general interest in both the film being shown, and also the festival at which it is being shown. It's a win for all parties involved.
Where The Funds Will Go
Providing that we can reach our target, funds will be used to pay for transportation and lodging to as many festivals as possible where "The Case of Evil" is an official selection. Festivals where we've been nominated for awards will naturally get priority.
In the event that we fail to reach our target, then funds will be applied towards fees required to self-distribute "The Case of Evil" via iTunes & Amazon, along with associated advertising and promotional costs.
