Jennifer Qualls hasn't added a story.
Dolly is blind, severely emaciated, has a broken femur, and only 6 months old. Please read, share, and donate.
I saw this original plea :
"Looking to connect with a rescue for large dogs and/or special needs dogs. I was browsing Craigslist Free Stuff when I came across an ad for a free blind mastiff puppy. The photos showed an extremely emaciated 6 month old mastiff pup. The "breeder" explained in the post that no one wanted to buy a blind puppy and she can't afford to feed it anymore so she is giving it away to the first person who shows up. Mom is a bull-mastiff and dad is an English-mastiff and the puppies were born mid-August. She received all puppy and yearly adult vaccines except rabies and bordatella and she is not altered. I connected with a mastiff rescue and went to pick her up and house her temporarily (can't keep/foster her per landlord). The rescue did not communicate with me after I picked her up. So I have had her for about a week now. I am trying to put weight on her, but can't afford to keep buying this much dog food. She can see a little, but not much. She is very good with my kids (10, 8, and 6 yrs old) and all people she meets. She grumble growls and barks at strange animals and smells. However, after a supervised, slow introduction she got along well with my other dog and cat. She is food aggressive with other dogs (probably from not being fed enough). But she is not food aggressive with people. She is not house trained but went in and out the dog door once I showed her that she could. I worked with her on "sit" yesterday and she was learning fast. I keep waiting for the other rescue to get back to me but this morning she is not using her back left leg, at all. It is just hanging there and her left hip is swollen. I don't know what she did or how she did it but she has hurt her leg pretty badly. I cannot afford vet bills but I don't want to take her to county or humane society where she will likely be put down for being blind and injured. So this is my attempt to find a rescue willing to take her in and give her a chance at the life she deserves. Sorry this was so long, but I wanted to give as much info as possible so there aren't too many questions needing to be asked. These photos were taken before the leg injury. I have limited internet access so I will try to respond as quickly as possible to any messages. Thank you in advance."
I immediately called az mastiff rescue and went to pick up this baby. Her leg was dangling but she showed no signs of pain, bouncing around my backseat with my daughter giving happy kisses. I rushed her to the Squaw Animal Hospital and met with Darlene. She was carried inside to be found to weigh only 25 pounds. She was given fluids and xrays immediately and it was found that her femur bone is broken in such a way that someone likely hit her either with a pole or bat. An outside orthopedist is being called in to assess the surgery needs. She may or may not need a specialist. Her blindness is attributed to bad breeding and a genetic disorder that the globes of her eyes are very small. She may be able to see some light and grey. She is so severely emaciated she is resting with heavy pain meds and iv's tonight.
Not only was she a product of backyard breeding but then found to be blind and starved for her condition. She was then thrown away free on cl and the lady picking her up had her a week in this condition before waking this morning to a limp leg... which the vet believes to be caused by abuse or trauma... mind you she is all but 6 months old and remember she lovingly gave kisses and happy pants all the way to her freedom. please share and help this pup succeed in her next 6 months. She has zero resentments about her past and even ate on my car with my daughter holding the food.
