Our beautiful Newf, Rufus, who is only 6 yrs old has been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and atrial fibrilation. He has been given 6-8 months . The cost of medication is ~$800/month. We want to keep him alive for as long as we can but can't afford the meds

Have you ever loved an animal like one of your children? They are truly a member of your family and ours is no exception. My name is Andrea and I cringe at asking anyone for financial help, but we have just received devestating news. Our beautiful dog, Rufus, has just been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and atrial fibrilation. This means he has an enlarged heart and irregular heart beat, which will lead to congesitve heart failure or a heart attack. The vet specialist has given him 6-8 months to live and the cost of medication is to be $800+ per month. We have a young family with two small children in daycare full time, plus a mortgage and simply do not have the money to pay for this, but of course want to give Rufus the best quality of life we can for as long as possible.

Newfs are known to be 'gentle giants' and Rufus  is no exception. He is literally a giant fluffly teddy bear with the sweetest disposition. He has brought so much joy, happiness and love to our lives that we are simply devestated by this news. We have always done everything we can to take good care of him (ramps to avoid stairs and jumping in and out of the SUV), regular check ups, healthy food, a dog walker, you name it. We have spoiled our dog in the hopes of giving him the best quality of life possible for as long as possible. We are so shocked by this development. We always worried about artithis or hip displaysia, but nothing so serious as this. These big dogs don't live that long to begin with (10-12 years), but he just turned 6 in October! He should have several more good years left with us. Even if he can beat the odds, (which we certainly hope he does), we simply cannot afford to pay these exorbitant vet bills plus regular blood work and EKG's at the specialists. Rufus is such a special dog. Everyone in the neighborhood knows him and loves him. No one knows our names when we walk him, but everyone knows Rufus. Strangers double-take when they see him and stop their cars to come over and meet him. Everyone asks to take pictures of him because he is THAT big and beautiful.(Last weigh in he was 187 lbs! ) If you know Rufus, or even if you don't but you love dogs and know what it is like to lose a piece of your heart and want to & are able to help, it would be so greatly appreciated. Like I said, I honestly feel so sheepish asking for financial assistance, but people do it all the time for lesser things and I think Rufus is worth it. I've always said, if you don't take a chance you haven't got one. So if you can, please help ease the financial burden so we can give Rufus a chance to live comfortably with his loving family just a little while longer. With sincerest thanks....
