Apollo is a 15 year old recently blinded Appaloosa Gelding. He has suffered from ERU or Equine Reoccurring Uveitis. The pressure in his eyes became so bad he required shots to treat the condition that would ultimatly take his sight.
His quality of life is not where it could be. He is a very social boy and loves trail rides, Formerly he lived his days ponying and being groomed by special needs kids and his capacity as a therapy horse was something he loved.
He is unable to be around other horses as he cannot defend himself, yet he hates being alone. While keeping him alone keeps him safe from physical harm it creates other problems. Apollo refuses to eat or drink if he is isolated completely from the other horses. While a little goat or small animal for companionship will help with that, he is most happy when he can be a HORSE and engage in the things he loves best.
Apollo came to ive with us only recently and he has presented with a list of issues due to long term neglect. His frogs were non existent and he had a bad case of hoof rot. While we can fix these issues, and some are already on the mend, like his feet, the one thing we cannot give him and the only thing hindering him from having the life he used to.... We cannot restore his sight. OR CAN WE???
Jordycanid .com has an aid for horses just like Apollo and it can in effect help them see again. The sooner Apollo gets this device the sooner he can begin to reclaim his life. I have spent time with him and believe without a doubt that if he can get his confidence back he will begin to gain the weight back, and no longer feel helpless. He can get back to his glory days where he was able to move more freely without running into things, He will be healthier and happier and once again be able to take a saddle and rider. to be able to find a spot to lay and roll without fear of getting injured. To be able to lay in the sun or in the cool of the night and rest peacefully without feeling vulnerable. And even be able to defend himself and be with other horses again.
Apollo needs your help. No contribution is too small and each one is packed with love and compassion. of the 7 horses we have here at present each one was a horse that desperatly needed the love and comitment we were willing to give them. We have been able to help each one of them though sometimes it is a struggle. Apollo has proved to be a much greater challange but he is not without hope and you can help get him to where he needs to be.
