Dogs are filled with hope.

When dogs are abandoned, abused, neglected and left behind, it is hope that keeps them going.

This is a tale about hope and second chances.

Trooper and Eli were two dogs that were down on their luck.

Trooper arrived at the shelter after he had been hit by a car. Abandoned by the side of the road, this poor guy was badly injured when he arrived at the shelter.

Eli arrived as a stray. Severely malnourished, more than 20 lbs underweight and with metal shards in his stool, this poor guy was skin and bones.

With limited resources to provide care for the thousands of animals they see every year, open admissions shelters like SBACC need to make difficult decisions with cases like Trooper and Eli. That’s where CARE of South Bend (CARE) comes in.

With soulful eyes and wagging tails, CARE recognized how special these babies were and committed to covering the cost of their care.

Weeks have passed and these two have had a series of victories and setbacks.

Going into surgery, the doctor had expressed some life threatening concerns for Trooper. Despite having only a 50% chance of survival, Trooper pulled through like a champion. This sweet guy is slowly but steadily adjusting to his new life on three legs.

Eli has steadily been gaining weight and was neutered last week. In the coming weeks, Eli will have a surgery to correct a painful condition of the eye called entropion. Once that surgery is complete we are hoping for a clean bill of health for this handsome guy.

This is where we need your help.

Although they are not out of the woods yet, these 2 angels are now on solid ground and are expected to make full recoveries. However, getting them to this point has not been cheap! CARE has accumulated close to $1,800 in medical bills so far for these babies.

While some say that’s a lot of money to save two homeless dogs, we believe these two sweethearts deserve a second chance. Can you help us with the cost of their care?
