Anika Syskakis hasn't added a story.
Groundbreaking documentary film "Maasai Like Me" is in the developmental stages, but with your support we will launch it off the ground!
Join the filmmaking adventure. Send Anika back to Tanzania and follow the creation of a teaser, or trailer, for this exciting upcoming documentary.
As a supporter, you will be the FIRST to view
the trailer as soon as it is completed. Not only that, but you will be
sent outtakes, pictures, and updates from the African continant - from Maasailand
So what is this all about, anyways?
If you have ever viewed an advertisement for Safari in East Africa, you have likely seen an overgeneralized picture of Maasai people. But where exactly do they live? What language do they speak? Where do their children go to school? And what is so special about this group of people, anyways?
"Maasai Like Me" will connect you, the viewer to Maasai men and women as human beings rather than a static, unchanging symbol.
Yes, you will learn about a culture so different from your own, but you will also connect with individuals from within this community. There will be no echoing voiceover, but instead a group of awesome Maasai introducing you to their everyday life
This film will illuminate the human experience, awakening empathy and human connection, re-shaping the way Canadian culture has been programed to imagine people so far removed from themselves.
The viewer joins the journey rather than overshadowing it, opening their minds to a new way of conceiving Africa.
But who am I? What is my connection?
A few years back I spent 6 months volunteering in East Africa. I was fortunate enough to collaborate with some pretty awesome Maasai people (turned friends) who were dedicated to empowering their own communities through education and health initiatives.
Upon returning to Canada I finished up my undergraduate degree in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Victoria, then enrolled for further schooling, specializing in Documentary Film Production. I knew that I needed to get back to Tanzania so I could introduce the world to the greatness that I was fortunate enough to experience.
My first step in the filmmaking process is funding. Unfortunately without a trailer or teaser, it is tough to secure financial backing.
Funders need visual motivation rather than solely words on
paper. The motivation behind this trip is to create a super
engaging trailor to get YOU excited, while getting the ball
rolling in the funding department ;)
With the help of all the lovely and generous people within my network (or outside of it!) I am looking to raise $3500 to fly over to Tanzania with my video camera in tow. I will dedicate a few weeks to some serious filming, from the Northern Tanzanian town of Arusha to deep within Maasailand.
Supporters will be updated along the way with pictures and anecdotes’, taking you along on the ride. Be it a video of a lion, or maybe a selfie after a week in the bush without showering - you will have to wait and see!
