Jewel is a backyard hen who was dumped at Hen
Harbor last summer, along with 3 of her sisters, because they
weren't laying enough eggs to please their human.
When they arrived, the hens were in dire condition. The first
hen, Buttercup, died of an impacted oviduct despite extensive
veterinary intervention, within 2 weeks of her arrival.
Jewel, the most outgoing of the remaining trio, showed early
signs of reproductive issues, but we hoped it could be mananged
without surgery. When the Deslorelin implant (which would
have shut down her ovaries) went out of stock worldwide, things went
downhill fast. She now has a full-blown oviduct impaction (stuck eggs)
that can only be fixed with surgery.
Fortunately, Jewel's impaction is not *that* bad yet. She can go
for another 4 or 5 days on antbioitcs to quell the infection and pain
meds to ameliorate her pain.
Maybe you or someone you know can send Jewel an early Christmas,
Thanksliving, Kwanzaa, or Hannukah gift by tossing a few dollars

She really wants to live, and her friends Scallops (the brown
hen in the video) and Jersey (the large black hen) are really counting
on her joining them out in the barn again. They won't come down to the
food dish without Jewel there to lead them.
