Apples the hen was rescued from a battery-cage factory farm in June 2013. She now lives at Hen Harbor sanctuary, a 501(c )(3) non-profit animal sanctuary in the Santa Cruz mountains.

She is currently dying from an impacted oviduct, a condition that is a directly attributable to the factory-farming industry: Being bred to lay so many eggs in such a short amount of time destroys the oviducts of industry hens after only a few years.

Apples needs an emergency $650 surgery to remove the impacted egg material, as well as any surrounding, necrotic tissue. Without it, she will die within the next few weeks.

If the surgery is successful, she needs a $200 hormonal implant to shut down her ovaries so more eggs don't pile up in her damaged oviduct and start the problem all over again.

Apples’ situation is not unique; 90 percent of laying hens from the egg industry will die of reproductive problems by the age of 5. This means that even if they are rescued from factory farms, they face a lifetime of serious health issues. Many of Apples’ sisters at Hen Harbor are alive only because of surgical intervention.

So many have had surgery and hormonal implants that the veterinary-care fund has run dry, right in Apples' time of need!
