A Family’s Journey — Not Yet Complete
A story of separation, resilience, and the hope of reunion
A message of gratitude and a request for support
My name is Yildiz Hussein, and I’m writing on behalf of my family to share our journey — one marked by hardship, perseverance, and the dream of being together again.
In 2011, the conflict in Syria changed everything for us. As a Kurdish family, we had already faced many challenges, but the war forced us to leave our home in Damascus and seek safety elsewhere. Over the years, we moved from place to place, eventually finding refuge in the Arbat camp in Iraq, where we lived for nearly a decade under extremely difficult conditions.
In 2021, my parents, two brothers, two sisters, and I were granted the opportunity to resettle in Canada. It was a life-changing moment. However, two of my sisters and their families remained behind — one still in the refugee camp, the other in Kurdistan. Both have since started families of their own, and we’ve worked tirelessly to bring them here so we can be reunited.
With the help of local organizations and a generous faith community in Edmonton, we were able to begin the sponsorship process. The financial requirements are significant — over $64,000 in total for both families. We contributed everything we had and received additional support from close friends to meet the remaining amount.
Now, we are working hard to repay that support. Balancing work, resettlement, and the cost of living has been overwhelming, but we remain hopeful. Our goal is simple: to bring our family together again in a safe place where our children can grow up with opportunity and peace.
We are reaching out to our community and beyond to ask for help. Any contribution — no matter the size — brings us closer to our goal. Your support will not only help us repay the kindness we’ve received, but also ensure that our family can finally be whole again.
