My name is Alexis. I am a first year student at Western University in London, ON. I study English and Creative Writing and I am enrolled in Scholar's Electives as well as the School for Advanced Studies in the Arts and Humanities (SASAH). SASAH is a new program to Western that started in 2013. It is an interdisciplinary program, where we study everything from English to Classical Studies to Philsophy. One of the most important parts of SASAH, to me, is the emphasis on international learning and experiences. We are required to take at least a second year language course, and hopefully will have the opportunity and funds to participate in some type of international exchange. This year I studied beginners Spanish.
From May 1-June 14 I will be traveling to Holguín, Cuba where I will continue to study Spanish for 6 weeks at Holguín University. I look forward to recieving my intermediate level Spanish all while immersing myself in Cuban culture.
During my trip, I will be writing daily journal entries. When I return to Canada, these journal entries will go on the SASAH blog. I will talk about my experience in a new environment, what it feels like to be a student studying Spanish. I will also write about any restaurants I go to, and what I was able to eat as I am allergic to gluten and dairy. I will take daily photographs with my DLSR and film camera. I will also be doing some watercolour and sketching of my surroundings. I want to take as much away from this trip as I possibly can.
The total cost for this trip is $2325 CUC, approximately $2828 CAD. This cost includes housing, my visa, processing fees for Western, food, and transportation within Holguín. On top of that I have paid $612.55 for my flights and $130 for Robert Q transportation to get to the airport.
Any additional money that I raise will go toward purchasing camera equipment and art supplies that I will take to Cuba in order to document my experiences.

As a full time student, I have managed to maintain a part-time job at Chapters throughout this year. But it is still difficult to keep up with daily expenses when I only have enough time to take on two shifts per week. I come from a single-parent, self-employed household. Currently, we do not have extra cash flow to fund my trip.
