Hi! My name is Sierra and I am a 17 year old high school senior from Elizabethtown, Kentucky. This fall I will be attending the University of Kentucky to major in Biology with a focus in agriculture. While I'm so excited to start this next chapter in my life, I'm also very nervous. This is because I have no idea how I'm going to pay for it.
At the beginning of my senior year, my parents got a divorce. Since then, I've been living with my mother. She makes a modest living, but at times things can be rough. We live almost 45 minutes away from my high school, so I use roughly a quarter of a tank of gas every day. On top of that my school district has no money, so anything that we do at school comes out of the student's pockets. We have mandatory senior dues, senior prom costs, graduation cap and gown orders, and even things like our honors cords that we must buy. Add all of these expenses to the bills and rent my mother pays at home, and you'll see how hard it is for my mother to do all of this on her own.
Despite how stressed my mother is, she has worked so hard to make sure that I haven't gone without during my last year at home. Never once has she complained about working to make sure that I could do things like go on my senior class trip or get the prom dress that I fell in love with. She's such an amazing person and has taken care of me my whole life, so now it's time for me to take care of her. This is why I'm trying to do everything in my power to make sure that she doesn't have to struggle to put me through college.
When I was little and found a stray penny on the ground, I would pick it up, commenting that I wished it were something bigger, such as a dime or a quarter. My mother would always respond by saying, "That's a penny more than you had before!" I never understood that saying until the time came where finding money on the ground felt like Christmas. This is why I have started my fund raiser. I have recieved a scholarship from UK that will cover all of my tuition, but that still leaves the cost of housing and books that has to come out of pocket. I need to raise $9,500 to cover the remaining cost of my freshman year. Even if I don't reach my goal, at least I will have made a dent in the cost of getting my education.
Anything that you can give to help me achieve my goals will be so greatly appreciated. I'm usually not one to ask for help. If I could do this on my own, there is no way that I would be asking strangers for their money, but everyone knows that college is expensive.Thank you so much to anyone who can contribute!
