NeuroColor m otion: Structured v isual s timulation for b rain h ealth
I am Edijs Kravalis, a professional painter working in abstract expressionism and action painting, with long-term, practice-based expertise in color perception, visual dynamics, and their neurological effects. This project focuses on the development of structured visual stimulation videos intended to support mental health, cognitive rehabilitation, and neurodegenerative condition care, including Alzheimer’s disease.
Clinical relevance and urgency
Rates of mental health disorders, stress-related neurological dysregulation, and cognitive decline are increasing globally, affecting individuals across all age groups. At the same time, healthcare systems face growing limitations in access, time, and non-pharmacological support options. Current neuroscience and cognitive psychology demonstrate that the brain remains plastic and responsive to targeted sensory input throughout the lifespan, making early, accessible, and supportive interventions increasingly important.
Research in visual neuroscience, neuroaesthetics, and art-based therapeutic interventions shows that color exposure and controlled visual motion influence emotional regulation, attentional stability, memory processing, and autonomic nervous system activity. While these mechanisms are already applied in clinical and rehabilitative contexts, accessible, purpose-designed visual stimulation tools suitable for broad public use remain limited.
Mechanism of action
Color processing involves both visual and limbic brain systems, while motion engages attentional, predictive, and integrative neural networks. When systematically structured, color and movement can support emotional stabilization, reduce cognitive load, and promote engagement of memory-related circuits. This approach is particularly relevant for individuals experiencing depression, anxiety disorders, trauma-related conditions, mild cognitive impairment, and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as those undergoing long-term stress or recovery.
Who this work is for
The developed materials are intended to support a wide range of users, including:
-
individuals living with mental health conditions
-
people at risk of cognitive decline or in early stages of neurodegenerative disease
-
older adults seeking cognitive engagement
-
caregivers and family members supporting loved ones
-
rehabilitation centers, wellness programs, and community health initiatives
Development approach
This is not expressive art used therapeutically without structure. The videos are deliberately designed perceptual environments, developed through professional artistic methodology aligned with established scientific research. The material is intended as a non-invasive, supportive resource, suitable for rehabilitation settings, caregiver support, wellness programs, and individual use.
Use of donations
Donations fund a six-month development phase, including research integration, perceptual testing, and professional video production. Following this phase, all completed materials will be made freely accessible to the public (published on www.kravalis.com, Youtube, sent to institutions and research partners ), ensuring broad and equitable access. The goal is to deliver a scalable, evidence-informed visual resource that can meaningfully complement existing mental health and cognitive rehabilitation strategies at a time when such tools are urgently needed.
