Save Croatan Yearbook Editors
The 2012-2013 Croatan High School Yearbook, "Finding Scintilla" was one of the best yearbooks produced by the school. The recipient of a few awards--a nationally acclaimed photograph and induction into the "Walsworth Gallery of Excellence"--and has been well received by the student body. Each student seems to be awed by the amount of dedication and hard work the girls of the yearbook staff have put into it. But, because of 6 words, this yearbook is being used by the administration to prevent the three editors from graduating.
As a senior prank, the girls inserted the names "Ben Dover," "Ophelia Hiney," and "Mike Hawk" into the "not pictured" sections of the Freshmen, Sophomore, and Junior Class pages. This clever, though admittedly rather crude joke has been punished severely by the administration of the school. Once brought to the attention of Walsworth, the book was removed from the Gallery if Excellence. To the three editors, this is heart-breaking enough but the principal of Croatan, determined to "uphold the reputation of himself and his school has referred to the prank as "vandalization of school property" and has levied the following punishments:
1. The girls must spend 3 days in In-School-Suspension. One day for each offense.
2. The girls will not be permitted to attend Project Graduation, an end of the year celebration with students they have been through 12 years of schooling with.
3. The existing copies of "Finding Scintilla" may be confiscated and the yearbook editors are responsible in full for paying $2100 [≈ Typical household annual food spending on restaurants (2009)] for surplus yearbooks that "can not be sold due to offensive material."
4. Principal Poletti has threatened the assignment of a 10 page paper on ethics
If the girls do not fulfill these criteria, they will graduate from Croatan High School, but will not, however, receive their diplomas or walk across the stage at the Graduation Ceremony on June 7th until this ultimatum is met.

has accumulated nearly 300 signatures and is growing by the minute. These signatures constitute both permission for the names to be in the book (which makes any claims of vandalization impossible) and a call for non-financial punishment, if any.
These girls, all of whom plan to attend facilities of higher-education are not capable of paying 700 dollars [≈ Comcast cable internet for a year (2011)] each, and can not hope to earn this exorbitant sum in the space of a single week. The names contained in the book were not placed there with malicious intent and, as the girls were all minors at the time of publication, if someone is to blame, the advisor of the yearbook class must be expected to bear some of the burden.
Not only is this exorbitant fee ethically wrong, it is preventing students from achieving something they have worked their whole lives to attain. Please donate at least one dollar to helping these girls. Their future, and a precedent which will last for years to come depends on your contribution.
If you cannot donate to this cause, at least sign the aforementioned petition.
