The annual Global Day of the Drum "GDOD" event about is the Healing Arts, Drummming and Dance Heritage, indigenious Re-discovery and Spiritual Ecology.
GDOD is the first self-conceived Pan African holiday in modern history. It’s inaugural event made history on July 3rd - 5th, 2011 in nineteen (19) locations around the world including (the Caribbean, the Americas, Europe and Africa), as it was the first Global Peace and Healing event of it's kind to initiate a synchronized global drumming event without corporate sponsorship.
This robust and energetic debut commemorated article (64/169) of the United Nations (UN) declaration of 2011 as the international Year for people of African Descent (IYPAD) The initiative is in further accordance with the UN's recommendation of the decade for People of African Descent 2013 to 2023.
The Global day of the Drum intuitive is cultural prototype ready to be put into the hands of eager social and cultural entrepreneurs and community development partners, who can help us imagine the possibilities of re-discovering indigenous knowledge for modern healing and can transform those ideas and folkway into our current reality.
The event was conceptualized by Ian Douglas inspired by the commemoration IYPAD. Its trademark and brand, is a wholly and exclusively owned entity of the Ian Douglas Foundation (IDF), a cultural enterprise founded in April 2006 and registered in Barbados 2011. GDOD is celebrated on July 5th, the one hundred and eight sixth days (186th) of the year. This day, is symbolically and traditionally the geographical meridian day, bringing the origins and celebration of our people along with the causes of our spiritual, cultural, socioeconomic perception, beliefs and judgments to the centre of world consciousness. The event is in further accordance with Article/Resolution /68/237/ of the UN General Assembly recommendation of the Decade for People of African Descent (DPAD). 2015-2025.
The Drum Ritual takes place from 6:00pm to 6:18pm,eighteen minutes is broken down into two continuous sessions of nine (9) minute each: 1. The first nine minutes is the acknowledgement of those who came be for us, with a traditional rhythm relative to the people of Grenada. 2. The second nine minutes will be a rhythm give by the GDOD team shared with the rest of the world.
