FLESH-NEXUS, HUMAN SWORD
Flesh-Nexus, Human Sword mixes movement meditations with the logical capacities of generative AI to construct movement scores — blending digital logic and somatic practice to explore interconnectedness and collective movement. By reimagining the space between us as a "virtual social fascia", it dances in the perverse threshold between physical and digital entanglement.
With a working title of Flesh-Nexus, Human Sword, this project will be a new quintet continuing to develop my choreographic work on interconnectedness — that I began in my last work, fragile & useless.
FIRST RESEARCH RESIDENCY
This week of research will build on past methodologies, now experimenting with the digital logic of AI in helping to generate movement scores. Alongside this, we'll shape and texture our movement practice in dialogue with texts by William S. Burroughs, Laboria Cuboniks, Georges Bataille, and Brian Massumi. This residency aims to develop technical strategies for a dance in which performers interpret shared movement scores individually while inside of an overarching choreographic system.
Not only will this week give us time to address some technical questions about our process, it will also allow us to document our work so we can apply for further arts council funding.
ABOUT ME
I'm a contemporary dance artist based in Montreal with a research-based choreographic practice. As a queer, first-generation child of the internet and a "third culture kid" trained in post-modern Western concert dance, my work investigates the body's entanglement with borders, thresholds, movement, and digitality — drawing on 2SLGBTQIA+ and popular cultures, post-internet aesthetics, animation, reality television, cinema, and video games.
My iterative solo, limbic cum rag (formerly known as lcr.i/2569/2015-2019), used the green screen as a conceptual framework to interrogate the body as a site of projection. My first group work, fragile & useless, imagined what a contemporary folk dance — made in and of this era of hyper-digitization — might look like. Where my last works have leaned heavily on materials and ideas outside of the body, this project will focus as concretely as possible on craft itself: on shaping our physical bodies and building choreographic forms together, exploring how space and time shape relationship.
TIMELINE
Our goal is to raise enough funds so that this residency can occur before September 2026.
WHERE YOUR MONEY GOES
As this work is not currently funded in any way, your contribution will help to cover the full costs of this first residency — and allow us to create some documentation to apply for further council funding. Your help will make this first residency possible!
Our current goal is $5,300, which covers the full costs of one week of research for:
- Wages for two dancers, one choreographer (me), and one outside eye (Katie Ward)
- Studio rental for twenty-five hours
- Insurance
All fees are in line with CADA-EAST Professional Standards for Dance: https://cadaontario.wildapricot.org/psd_04_fees_payments
