Hello! My name is Caroline Carlin, I live in La Pradera (San Joaquin, Venezuela) and I have been working (along with Neyla and Isabel - and most recently William) at rescuing and giving shelter to sick, hurt and stray or abandoned dogs & cats, giving them food and health care, including their proper spay/neutering, and finding them a new loving adoption home. We have named this project "AMIGOS CON PATAS" (Friends with Paws)
Presently, we are taking care of 17 dogs and 18 cats. A few of them are in temporary homes (Neyla's and mine) and social areas of our neighborhood. At the shelter we have 8 dogs and 15 cats. We will introduce you to them all in the next days along the updates.

Cats and dogs want PET FOOD.
It is true that this has become quite expensive in our country in local currency, but on the other hand, due to the extreme scarcity of staple foods as rice, corn flour, chicken and eggs, we are having a hard time feeding them with cooked food to match their optimal daily rations and balanced nutritional requirements, especially those who are under treatment for previous malnutrition.
One-month supply of cat food for 18 cats (30kg approx) = 50 EUR
One-month supply of dog food for 17 dogs (150kg approx) = 150 EUR
SACHA wants a roofed shelter to sleep outside in the Dog's Area.
We had to move SACHA outdoors because she was steadily being attacked by POPEYE and due to her fragile health situation she was not able to defend herself thus suffering from constant bullying. She has a couple rusty metal drums we found over the place to hide away from the rain, but being a huge dog it is indeed very uncomfortable and cold.
We have the cement but need to buy the bricks and roof to make an outside shelter for her and other dogs that can't stay inside, and pay the manwork.
Cost of a roofed shelter for (initially) two dogs (200 bricks, 1.5 x 2mts roof, 1m3 sharp sand, etc. - includes manwork) = 200 EUR
LUCY and MURCY want the outer fence to be finished and secured!
Well ... I guess in fact they ADORE to roam through the actual fence and escape outside to play and explore the surroundings ... I'm pretty sure their Christmas Wish was just made out of love for us caretakers haha! :)
NOTE: Manwork and materials costs have practically doubled since we mentioned these pending issues in our last campaign.
Costs of finishing the outer fence:
- 4 LOCKS TO SECURE THE DOORS IN FENCED AREAS AND MAIN ENTRANCE = EUR 35
- ESTIMATED MANWORK TO FINISH THE OUTER FENCING = EUR 100
- ESTIMATED MATERIALS = EUR 40
(Materials needed: 3 or 4 kgs of wire to secure the fence to the poles, 1 or 2 kg of electrodes for welding and repair the main door.)
I just want to add that as soon as the outer fence is done and all the perimeter secured, we will then be able to present our project to the Municipality to officialize the custody of the area and hopefully get their backup so we can then ask directly the manufacturers and big companies for pet food donations and other supplies.
New Cats and Dogs need spay/neutering and health supplies!
4 dogs: Newton, Tito, Lucy and Murcy, and 6 cats: Papurri, Cerecita, Frida, Gala, Triska and Cari, missed last week's spay/neutering day. We also have a new female cat rescued with her 3-days old kitten, still in delicate treatment.
Also, all our animals need to be de-parasited, and new rescues to be vaccinated. We haven't been able to afford either actions due to costs rising up to 300% and more for most veterinarian health supplies, added to the scarcity and selling limitation of some items (vaccines, for example).
Next spay/neuter day will be in January 2016, hopefully at the same costs. The following are last week's prices.
Global spay/neutering costs for the 4 dogs and 7 cats: 24 EUR
You can also sponsor one dog's surgery for EUR 2.50 or one cat for EUR 2.00
Vaccines, de-parasitation and other health supplies amount to approximatively EUR 20.
