Kristina Olszewski hasn't added a story.
Working in East Orange, NJ (a highly urban area), our work parking lot is a flurry with kitties. We are working with a person from PAWS in Montclair, NJ who used to work at this exact location years ago. She implemented a TNR program (trap, neuter, release (feral) or adopt) here, and there were no more cats when she left. We really want to continue her work and have these kitties "fixed" before kitten spring fever hits. We have dedicated volunteers to do the brunt work; however, it costs $80 for each cat to be fixed and vetted ( this includes a revolution flea treatment)
We take care of the kittties as best as we can with food and water. With the NJ winter upon us, temperatures are falling into single digits. Most feral cats will die from stravation, hypothermia, or illnes. Yet, they do not heisitate to produce multiple litters before their untilmely demise. Please, please help us to save the kitties! If not the kitties, then the furthering of even more unwanted animals. Even if it is just $1. Every little bit helps.
To date, 1/21/14, we have five success stories that have been funded. Buddy the Elf is an orange fluff ball kitty that is still even too young to fix! He has just been placed in a foster home that is a long way away from his once resided tree trunk. Pearl is a 1 year old kitty that is enjoying her first day of adopted life in her new home. Her picture is above!
On 1/20/14 we fixed 3 cats from the colony, a buff female, a grey male and a super friendly orange male who turned out to be FIV +. We are going to re test him, but our goal is to find him a home and NOT release him into the colony. We have more appointments for February.
In addition to raising money for vetting and surgery, we have created a wishlist for anyone that feels more comfortable donating items instead of cash. We need:
Wet Cat Food
Dry Cat Food
Litter
Large Towels
Wee Wee Pads
Frontline Flea Treatment for Cats or Revolution Flea Treatment for Adult Cats
Sardines, Tuna or any smelly fish cans.
Gloves, small paper plates, plastic spoons
Empty Friskies Boxes
Cat Nip or Cat Nip Spray
Large Traps with double doors
Newspaper
We raised enough money to fix about 12 cats, but there are more there, so we want to make sure we can cover the surgeries for all of them, plus food, shelter...
Thank you all for being so generous and caring. You are helping to reduce the unwanted cat population!
1/31/14 Update- The big headed FIV + Julius is going to a sanctuary in Maryland this coming Thursday- the cost of admission is $350.00; he will be able to live his life out there, but the 4 hour ride ( each way) and the gas $$, its' a hefty trip. If anyone has not donated and still wants to, please do so, every penny helps now because we did not expect to spend so much one on cat.
Pearl had her follow up eye visit which we also funded this week; her eye is saved, but she also cost us over 1,000 dollars in total vetting.
We appreciate all the help you have given us.
We are trying to buy revolution instead of frontline because that kills fleas, ticks, roundworms and ear mites and some of the colony cats have had ear mites......
2/19/14 To date 7 cats have been fixed and returned to colony; 2 have been adopted out and one taken to a sancutary so we have improved the lives of 10 cats and we are not done yet. We could NEVER do this without you!
Thank you all! XO
