Peter Cagner hasn't added a story.
Food insecurity is a significant issue in East Africa because of the long rain and equally long dry seasons, which prohibit farmers from growing crops year-round thus causing seasonal starvation and unemployment.
The Project also looks to employ construction workers and to train them in building the Mavuuno greenhouses for customers.
This social enterprise is a win-win situation for Rwandans, where the owners can make money from constructing and selling greenhouses, The Production of Greenhouses create jobs by employing young construction workers, and also provide small-scale farmers an affordable way to increase their food security.
The people they are helping have next to nothing to start with, and can barely feed or support thier families. The Rwandan people are so grateful to be able through this project to work and earn wages during the wet and dry seasons as well as support and feed their families.
All Expenses for the Trip are the sole responsibility of the volunteers going on the project.
Jonathan has already been awarded a $900 grant towards the trip, and is presently working on scholarships, but working part time and keeping up with his full schedule of studies is a difficult uphill struggle.
He is very committed to keeping his commitments and to help the people of Rwanda in any way he can. The Travel expense are as follows Airfare from Philadelphia to Rwanda is approximately $1750.00 RT , plus the additional Airfare for Jonathan to go from LAX to Philadelphia which will be an additional $400 RT (which is an added expenses east coast participants do not have, but geography cant dictate who gets help and who does not). Other expenses for the trip that will cover meals, housing, necessary immunizations and malaria medications required for travel to the region. The additional expenses total Approx. $500 per week, in which $250 goes for the CDC Immunizations and medications.
Jonathans estimated total cost for the Trip will be approximately $3150 in which he has a little over $1150 already covered.
We are so proud of him, and he is working so hard to meet his goals, and I only wish we could afford to pay all of his expenses, but times are so tough right now, we can barely make ends meet as is between Jonathans school expenses, his brothers college expenses, and our own living expenses at home.
Any type of help no matter how much or how little will genuinely help more than you can ever know, not just for Jonathan, but for the people or Rwanda for who he is going on this trip to help in the first place. A summer abroad with Penn State's Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship (HESE) program in Kenya and Rwanda is an incredible growth experience both personally and academically. Jonathan will be fortunate to work on the Affordable Greenhouse team, with four other PSU students.
