Help us bring this powerful community art piece to the Autumn Lights Festival at Lake Merritt, and to the rest of Oakland.
"K(NO)W JUSTICE, K(NO)W PEACE" is a billboard-sized animated art project brought to you by Neon Voices, led by Oakland-based artist and engineer Mauricio Bustos. Utilizing wood, LEDs, color, and animation, we aim to craft large-scale public displays that powerfully convey messages of social justice. “No Justice, No Peace” is a powerful social justice slogan which originated in the 1980s during protests against acts of violence against African Americans. By adding a K and W to the “NO” in the slogan, we are emphasizing the conjunctive interpretation that neither peace nor justice can exist without the other.
Neon Voices is the creative force behind the iconic Black Lives Matter installation adjacent to the bustling I-580 freeway in Emeryville. This piece was selected to debut at the Autumn Lights Festival at Lake Merritt from October 12th through October 14th. We are currently in the process of finding a permanent home for it after the festival.
We are asking for financial contributions to support this project which will be seen by thousands of visitors to the Autumn Lights Festival and will then move to a permanent location to impact many more. Your contributions will go directly to the costs of designing, building and deploying this important piece.
Each of the twenty 26” tall letters will be CNC cut, painted and then wrapped in 200’ of LEDs. The mounting system will be industrial-strength and modular so that we can transport and easily install at different locations. A computer will perform animation to toggle between “NO JUSTICE NO PEACE” and “KNOW JUSTICE KNOW PEACE”.
