What is in store for the VH Coke Bottle Statue?
My wife Marie and I purchased the Arey Cove
House where the Coke Bottle statue was sculpted from an old elm tree
in the mid-80s by
Bill Epton, a long-time summer resident who
taught at the sculpture department at the Maryland School of the Arts.
Like many people living on Vinalhaven, we understand that the Coke
Bottle statue is a beloved island landmark, that we all refer to when
giving directions to, "State Beach," or "the transfer
station," or to someone's house on the East side of Vinalhaven.
Many, many people have petitioned us to "make sure you
save the Coke Bottle, before it rots and falls
over."
Thankfully the
Coke Bottle “Statue of Liberty,” is
undergoing a full restoration this winter at a local craftsmen's shop
on Carver's Harbor. The statue, cut down in mid-October, will be
restored over the next 6 months and then returned to its spot near
Peqout Road and Round the Island Road sometime around July 4th of
2019. It is a complicated conservation project, with many stages,
that will result in a restored statue that should last for many years
to come.
The SAVE THE COKE BOTTLE FUND
We are starting a SAVE THE COKE BOTTLE fundraising drive to pay for its restoration. Sponsored by the Vinalhaven Historical Society and many members of our community, we are asking everyone who lives on island or visits in the summer to contribute to its repair. The donations will be used to restore the statue, pay for the restoration materials and labor, pay for the grinding of the stump in the old site, pay for a concrete base for the restored statue and pay for a plaque detailing the Coke Bottle Statue's history, on site. The estimated cost is about $8,500.00. If any additional funds are raised they will be donated to the Vinalhaven Historical Society, which is sponsoring the restoration and overseeing the finances.
Many local folks are assisting us in this restoration, including Merry Boone, Dave Moyer, Mike Bunker, Bill Chilles, and the staff at the Vinalhaven Historical Society.
