You will be supporting four young New Zealand Windsurfers racing at the International Sailing Federation Youth Worlds and Youth Olympic Games. They were nominated by Yachting New Zealand after a successful sailing season. “We are Stoked!”
Who, when and where’s the racing?
In July RS:X youth windsurfers 18 year old Xanthe Bowater of Christchurch and 15 year old Patrick Haybittle from Auckland are travelling to Tavira, Portugal to attend the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Youth Worlds. Following them overseas in August, Bic Techno sailors 16 year old Finn Croft from the Hibiscus Coast, and 15 year old Coral Headey of Tauranga are traveling to Nanjing, China to compete in the prestigious 2014 Youth Olympic Games. Finn and Coral have been nominated by Yachting New Zealand to the New Zealand Olympic Committee.
How can you help?
Donate any amount of money via this Fundrazr website. It is safe and easy to donate using a Visa or Mastercard. Payments go to our Paypal account. They want to raise $3,000 or more per sailor towards their campaigns. All money raised will be split equally between all four sailors.
What’s in it for you?
Select and claim a perk. Check out the ‘perks’ on the right hand side of this webpage. They offer some cool options. You will get a ton of satisfaction supporting some hard working talented young windsurfers. Who knows? They could be at the real Olympics in 2020.
Thanks Alan at Madloop Windsurfing for the lessons.
You will also be entered in a Monthly draw:
We will randomly select a donator from each month for a cool prize. May's is a cool Mr Vintage Southern Cross Tee Shirt. Donate this April and win.
What else are the sailors doing to fundraise?
In June the sailors are planning a long distance, downwind, midwinter ‘Sail-a-thon' along the Auckland coastline. You can donate for their milage sailed via this website. This year all four sailors will be 'Going the distance!'
Is there any other funding for these sailors?
Yes there is.
The ISAF Youth Worlds are mostly covered by funding and donations from High Performance Sport NZ, Oceanbridge, NZL Yachting Trust and Zhik. The sailors must still contribute $3,000 towards this event. Pre Worlds training regatta expenses include board charter, share of accommodation and food. Estimated $1,500.
The Youth Olympic Movement is an important sector of the New Zealand Olympic Committee but given budget constraints and the distribution of funds for senior Olympic and Commonwealth Games, the Youth model is run cost neutral to the NZ Olympic Committee. Therefore, Coral and Finn have to pay NZ$ 2,662.00 each to attend the Games. All funds over and above this amount will be going towards coaching with Bruce Kendall leading up to the event.
All sailors have numerous windsurfing equipment to be maintained during training. They will be needing quality wetsuits for midwinter training in NZ.
The sailors may apply for funding from gaming trust funds but this has proved difficult with rare success in the past. Crowd sourcing websites such as fundrazr.com give the sailors a real sense of ownership in their own destiny. It shows family, friends, businesses and good keen people are supporting them.
Any excess funds raised will pay for future coaching, overseas regattas and equipment. Eg. Hong Kong Open Windsurfing regatta in November 2014 or world class events in 2015.
What have these guys done so far?
They have attended numerous national, international and world championship regattas e.g. all have competed in the New Caledonia Nationals. Xanthe and Patrick raced at the 2013 RS:X Open Youth Worlds in Civitivecchia, Italy. Xanthe, Finn and Coral went to the 2013 Bic Techno Windsurfing Worlds in Sopot, Poland. Xanthe won the Open Woman Techno World Title at this event.
What are they doing now?
“All the team have been training real hard all season.” says YNZ head youth coach Ian Neely
Their build ups include coaching, gym, cardio work, yoga and plenty of sailing. Patrick is travelling to Weymouth, England with the NZ Youth team in April to attend the English Youth Nationals as a pre worlds training event. Xanthe is attending the RS:X Youth Europeans in Turkey. The Youth Olympics sailing venue is on Jinniu Lake, Nanjing, China. At this stage Finn and Coral will be travelling and training in a variety of venues and NZ lakes to simulate this.
Who inspires and mentors these guys?
“We are proud to be following in the footsteps of some legendary Kiwi Olympic Windsurfers!”
A bunch of keen coaches and mentors take an interest and inspire them. These include Yachting New Zealand (YNZ) head youth coach Ian Neely, YNZ board coach Dave Robertson, double Olympian Bruce Kendall and Olympic coach and mentor Grant Beck. Current NZL senior Olympic Windsurfer campaigner Natalia Kosinska has been training and racing with these guys in her buildup for her season. She has been blown away by their improvements over the NZ summer. Windsurfing Olympian JP Tobin has been giving technical and training tips too. Also their home clubs of Manly, Murrays Bay, Takapuna, Tauranga and Naval Point and YNZ have provided coaching and support.
More about ISAF Youth Worlds:
New Zealand has a proud history of success at the ISAF Youth Worlds that dates back to 1971. The 2014 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship in Tavira, Portugal is the 44th Championship. The dates are 12th-19th of July 2014. Past notable Kiwi winners include Americas Cup skippers, Olympic Medallists and Volvo Ocean Race sailors such as, Chris Dickson, Russell Coutts, Murray Jones, Dean Barker and windsurfer Tom Ashley.
‘As the Youth Worlds has grown and travelled through the past 44 years, one constant has remained - the Championship's uncanny ability to give the sailing world a glimpse at its future stars…. It is perhaps less surprising that so many future stars find their way to the top of the sport through the Youth Worlds when examining the concept of the Championship. Essentially the criteria for entering is simple. Being good enough to represent your nation…. In 2006 63 nations sent youth sailors to this regatta’
Yachting NZ has selected a team of twelve under 19 year old sailors in eight classes to attend the 2014 ISAF Youth Worlds in Portugal. The team members including Xanthe and Patrick were selected on combined results of their 2014 Class Nationals and the 2014 International Sail Auckland Regatta.

About the Summer Youth Olympic Games
The Youth Olympic Games is an elite sporting event for young people from all over the world. It is an event distinct from other youth sports events. They integrate a unique Culture and Education Programme (CEP), based around five main themes: Olympism, social responsibility, skills development, expression and well-being and healthy lifestyles. Away from the field of play and through a variety of fun and interactive activities, workshops and team-building exercises, the CEP gives the participating athletes the opportunity to learn about the Olympic values, explore other cultures and develop the skills to become true ambassadors of their sport.
The first Youth Olympic games was in 2010 in Singapore. The 2nd Youth Olympic Games is in Nanjing, China from the 16th to 28th of August 2014. Over 3,500 competitors will compete in over 28 sports. What is the RS:X Windsurfer?
The RS:X came about as a result of a successful bid by Neil Pryde WIndsurfing to supply one design windsurfing equipment for the 2008 Olympic Games in China. The RS:X was designed in 2004 and went into production in 2005.
The RS:X one design features a high technology rig, with carbon mast and boom, a ‘wide-style’ board that merges modern windsurf board design with a centreboard, thus enabling competitions to be held in virtually any condition from 3 to 30 knots. The RS:X is a dynamic, versatile class to observe, and racing is always close, exciting and visually appealing. Youth sail with an 8.5sqm sail.

What is the Bic Techno 293 Windsurfer?
In May 2007, the Bic Techno became an ISAF International Class for young sailors. Since then it has experienced rapid expansion worldwide and is now the largest one design windsurf class in the world. Over 400 sailors from over 300 countries and 6 continents have competed in the 2013 World Championships in Poland.
The Techno 293 Class is devoted to fostering the development of windsurf racing for competitors under the age of 17 years.
