Jenna Tullberg hasn't added a story.
My name is Jenna Tullberg and I am one of the five passionate candidates who are running for city council in Lafayette with a shared goal, to ban fracking. It is a danger to our water supply. It’s a danger to the air we breathe, and methane from natural gas contributes to climate change and is setting humankind on a path to disaster. Compelled by a desire to protect future generations and the rights of nature, each of us, three moms and two grandparents, is seeking public office for the first time. The Lafayette Community Rights Advocates include Anne Borrell, Tonya Briggs, Marty Feffer, Patricia Townsend, and Jenna Tullberg. We assert our community’s right to protect our environment from extractive industries that poison our air, water, and land and threatens irreversible climate destruction. We oppose fracking based upon Lafayette’s Community Bill of Rights and Lafayette’s Climate Bill of Rights. Why do we need community rights? • State and Federal Preemption – There are laws that allow large corporations to force harmful activities into communities – despite community opposition. • Corporate Privilege – Our structure of law elevates corporate decision-making over community decision-making. Corporations have court-conferred constitutional “rights.” They wield these “rights” against communities to eliminate local efforts that may interfere with industry plans to expand their operations, regardless of the impact on communities and nature. • The Regulatory Fallacy – Agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Labor Relations Board, and the Minerals Management Agency do not protect us. Rather, they regulate the amount of harm that is inflicted on our communities. • Nature as Property – Our legal system grants landowners the right to damage the environment, even though the entire community carries the impact. We want to empower a community rights-based approach to local governing. The people who are most impacted by policies must carry real weight in decision-making. We support affordable housing options, Lafayette's small businesses, and enhancing our educational system.
