My name is Heaven. I’m a prospective 2020 Student of Griffith University in AU. Although I can cover tuition on my own, it is required that I demonstrate means to support the general cost of living. There’s a $20,000 (twenty-thousand) dollar minimum.

I’m Canadian by birth and am a strong advocate for mental health, education and Human Rights within my current city and country; but, having a rare neurological condition (Dystonia) has left me wheelchair bound and being wheelchair bound has subjected me to many abuses and systemic barriers to safe and adapted housing.

Furthermore, the Canadian winter snow and poor plowing by the city makes it next to impossible to navigate within the winter months; city transit still requires being able to access the bus stop and sidewalks; but those are often buried. Cabs are largely inaccessible and the few that are remain booked to full capacity for most of the season.

After an 8 year battle for my current dwelling, my current space remains to be the ONLY fully accessible spot in this town; and even this spot is risky due to toxicity. I have been repeatedly turned away from Shelters due to discrimination and severely inaccurate assumptions about my care needs. Housing wait lists in general are 8-10 years long; but that timeline jumps to 10-15 for disabled populations. So, there is nowhere else to go.

Education and life in Australia - from lack of snow, to ease of information, to more adequate and realistic ideas of accessibility needs to the existence of “Changing Places” and other resources that Canada doesn’t have - would equal the fuller and brighter quality of life and the freedom that I yearn for.
