J Danger Wolf hasn't added a story.
Hello,
My name is J Wolf, and I am starting this campaign for my 11 year old (Today is his birthday!) shepherd mix, Zildjian. Z is a rescue mutt that I adopted exactly 10 years ago. Z is one of the best, most well-rounded dogs ever. He puts a smile on everyone’s face and never ceases to find new friends to pet his fluffy fur.
Zildjian has been an incredible companion to me and we’ve gone on several camping trips and have definitely enjoyed the outdoors together! For several years, Zildjian was the official “Tour Dog” for my band, and we were able to walk many miles together exploring this beautiful country. There could be no better friend. Zildjian, is also the alpha dog and big brother to our two beagles, Archie & Edie.
Always a big happy dufous, Z has been somewhat accident prone throughout his life. Broken toenails, eye scratch from a cat, broken canine tooth, dislocated tail and not one, but two ACL surgeries; One on each leg! Each time, we’ve done an incredible amount of rehab and he gets around on our daily walks without pain in either leg.
About a month ago, my fiancé and I noticed that Zildjian, wasn’t eating as much as he normally does. We also began to notice a rapid weight loss that had him drop 10 pounds in 2 weeks. He was starting to not act like himself.
After a visit to the vet, it was determined that there is a grapefruit-sized tumor attached to his spleen. This is pushing up against his stomach, causing him to not want to eat. This area has become tender and uncomfortable as well. There is a 60% chance that this growth could be cancerous.
First course of action:
Tomorrow, we have an appointment to get an ultrasound to get a better look inside at the size, position and possible spread of the growth. This will also help the doctors know what they are getting into before they operate. This will determine whether the splenectomy is even necessary or if the cancer is too far gone.
The actually splenectomy will completely remove Zildjian’s spleen, which dogs can live without. It is, however, a risky surgery as the spleen is made up of thousands of blood vessels and the possibility of blood loss is great. They will remove any other damaged tissue in the area. The mass will be sent to the lab for testing to see if it’s malignant or hopefully, benign.
If all goes well, he’ll live out the rest of his days as a lazy mutt, eating sticks in the sunshine of our yard, getting belly rubs and chasing squirrels.
If we do nothing, Zildjian will only have 6-12 months to live, as either his spleen will rupture, causing internal bleeding and slow death, or he’ll simply become too weak from not eating, in which case, we would take the proper steps because we DO NOT want him to suffer.
Why we need your help:
My fiancé and I are getting married in September of this year and Zildjian is standing up in our wedding. Also, after living most of his life without a yard to call his own, we bought a house, which we move into this weekend, that has a huge yard for him to explore and romp around in with his beagle pack mates. We can’t wait for him to actually get to enjoy it!
All of our money is currently tied up in the house, the move and the wedding and we simply cannot afford the upfront, estimated $2500 cost associated with the surgery. This price is considered, “Best Case” meaning no complications or unforeseen circumstances. We’ve already spent over $400 on testing and x-rays and the ultrasound tomorrow will run us over $400. Aftercare is extra and if needed, chemotherapy could cost thousands more.
We are asking for any size monetary donation to help us pay for his surgery. Depending on tomorrow’s outcome, the surgery could be performed as early as this week. The surgery would be performed by the same group of Veterinarians that have provided such great care in the past. As many painful procedures as he’s had, he loves going to the vet. That’s how I know he’s in good hands.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for considering helping my best friend.
Sincerely,
J & Nicky
