On January 2011, our mom Matilde, or Maty, as many people call her, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then, she had a surgery to attempt to remove the tumor, as well as chemotherapy. Her fight against cancer was visible through hair loss, loss of appetite, and weakness. In July, her doctors told her that there was not much that they could do for her. However, she found alternative medicine combined with conventional medicine that has made her stronger to fight the cancer. Although she does have health insurance, it does not cover everything, and there are many other expenses that she has to deal with. Plus she has been unable to work since the effects of the cancer and the chemotherapy became noticeable on her. If you have never met Maty, I can try to tell you what an amazing person she is, but that still won’t be a good description of what a wonderful person she is. She is always willing to help anyone, from her closest family and friends to a perfect stranger. She is a sister, an aunt, and a friend to many. All of her family has come together to support and be with her in this hardest time of her life. She is also our mom, the best mom in the world! Unfortunately, we have not had enough opportunities to be together because she lives in Colombia and we live in the USA. She was unable to get a visa to come to the United States until finally in 2008 when she came to see us for the first time in 13 years! Because of economic struggles for both my mom and for us, we have not been able to see each other as much as we would like. Now she is battling breast cancer with the hopes that she will be better and that we will be able to see each other and spend more time together to make up for lost time. She is currently facing the biggest battle of her life, and we can try to alleviate part of the financial burden and help her focus all of her strength and energy on her fight against cancer. Desde entonces tuvo una cirugía para tratar de quitar el tumor, igual como quimioterapia para combatir el cáncer. Su lucha contra el cáncer fue visible a través de su pérdida de cabello, pérdida de apetito y debilidad. En julio, sus médicos le dijeron que no hay mucho que pueden hacer por ella. Sin embargo, ella encontró la medicina alternativa combinada con medicina convencional que la han hecho más fuerte para combatir el cáncer. A pesar de que tiene seguro de salud, el seguro no cubre todo, y hay muchos otros gastos adicionales. Además, ella no ha podido trabajar ya que los efectos del cáncer y la quimioterapia se hicieron notar en ella. Si usted nunca ha conocido a Maty, puedo tratar de decirles la persona tan maravillosa que es, pero eso aún no sería una buena descripción de la persona tan estupenda que es. Ella siempre está dispuesta a ayudar a cualquier persona, desde sus familiares y amigos más cercanos hasta a un desconocido. Ella es una hermana, una tía y una amiga para muchos. Toda su familia se ha unido para apoyarla y estar a su lado en este momento tan difícil de su vida. Ella también es nuestra madre... ¡La mejor mamá del mundo! Por desgracia, no hemos tenido suficientes oportunidades para estar juntas porque ella vive en Colombia y nosotras vivimos en los Estados Unidos. Ella no pudo obtener una visa para venir a los Estados Unidos sino hasta finalmente en el 2008 cuando nos vino a ver por primera vez en 13 años. Debido a las luchas económicas, para mi mamá y para nosotras, no ha sido posible vernos tanto como quisiéramos. Ahora ella está luchando contra el cáncer de ceno con la esperanza de que se mejore y de que nos podremos ver y pasar más tiempo juntas para compensar el tiempo perdido. Ahora, ella está enfrentando la mayor batalla de su vida, y podemos tratar de aliviar parte de la carga financiera y ayudar a mantener toda su atención, su fuerza y energía en su lucha contra el cáncer.
