Where we are right now.
Our school (Sydney Pagon STEM Academy, located in Elim District, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) is currently under active construction. Hurricane Melissa caused extensive damages to our buildings, stripping away roof sections and flooding our classrooms, destroying our desktop computers and other electronic devices. We are working hard to replace some of the things that were damaged, but there are a few resources that I am seeking to get to enhance learning in my classroom. These are a multimedia projector and a printer.
Why a multimedia projector is important.
With damaged classrooms and limited resources, a high-quality,
classroom, multimedia projector will:
- Help bring lessons to life: A projector allows us to display digital textbooks, educational videos, and interactive lessons directly onto any intact wall/whiteboard.
- Make up for materials: Hurricane Melissa destroyed a lot of our physical textbooks, charts, and learning aids.
- Bridges the digital divide: A central projector ensures that every student can see the learning material at the exact same time, regardless of what they own.
Why a printer is critical.
- No devices at home: Several of our students do not own a smartphone, laptop, or tablet to access online resources.
- No internet access/network connectivity issue: Many households lack Wi-Fi or cannot afford the high cost cellular data for downloading school files. There are also those students who live in areas where network connectivity is very poor that even when they buy cellular data it goes to waste because they are unable to get a stable signal
- Provides physical instructional materials: Printed handouts and worksheets are the only way we can guarantee that all the students are on par with subject and topic contents, graded activity, quizzes and exams.
