The DeLan family of the Philippines lost everything. Help me rebuild their lives.
Most of you know I served an LDS mission in the Philippines. During this time I had the opportunity to meet the DeLan Family.
Mrs. DeLan was eager to be baptized into the LDS church along with her children. Her husband Roman, at the time, was not interested and was looking for a miracle. His miracle came one evening fishing when he caught a 200 pound blue marlin on only 20 pound test line. He had his miracle, and was baptized very soon after.
I fell in love with this family that consisted of Roman Sr, his wife Rosita, children Roman Jr, Joana, Sheila, Pamela, and Regin. I spent nearly every evening for three months with the family, Father and I would set out and spent hours talking about life and arguing about the little moving star being a satellite..to him it was an airplane. He would get up every morning and leave on a small flimsy boat and fish for anything to feed the family and sell what was left in the market as financial means to support the family. They all resided in a single room bamboo hut on the beach and I coveted the simple happy way of their lives.
A year or so on my return home, Mrs Delan died tragically of meningitis from an infection in her uterus. This left Mr. Delan to fish and take care of his children on his own. The immediate family had shunned them for joining the LDS church and Mr. Delan was left on his own. His letters just showed how tired he was.
I vowed to support the family the only way I could, and have sent $100 dollars a month, for years, via Western Union.
I have been blessed to see this money help Roman, raise his children, get them medicine, clothing, food, get them all through school, and now they are a large happy family all living near each other in a small village North of Cebu City. Father is now a grandfather to many and my $100.00 a month is spread out thinner and thinner, but Father always makes it work. Never a dime to himself, always making sure the family is safe, feed, and healthy.
The world is hearing about the City of Tacloban being wiped off the map, but what the news is slow to release is that the Island of Cebu, especially the fishing villages that peppered the Western coast were demolished.
The DeLan family has lost everything and I can only help so much. I am reaching out to my friends and relatives to donate a dollar or two to a worthy cause that is so personal and dear to me. I Feel guilty that I can not take care of every soul in the Philippines, but that is what the international relief groups are doing vigorously. I can only help a single family get back on their feet and see them enjoy life once again.
