I have known Kevin, my brother-in-law, for over 15 years. He has been a rock in my life, and is the brother I always wanted and finally got when my older sister married him several years ago. To me he’s not an in-law, he is my blood and I love him with all my heart. Kevin’s family built a house with their own hands, located in the bay area off the town of Hempstead in Long Island. Throughout Kevin’s childhood and adult years he spent many summer days and warm Fall and Spring nights at the bayhouse, always graciously extending the invite to anyone and everyone to join. It was a place of love and serenity, with so many happy memories created and captured in photos and journals kept at the house. Tragically, Kevin lost his Mom when he was a teenager and his Dad passed away just a few years ago; however their presence was always warmly felt at the bayhouse, seen in the dozens of photos and read in their personal log books. As of the end of October when Hurricane Sandy ripped through Long Island, the bayhouse and everything in it, was completely destroyed and washed away. The photos and journals of Kevin’s parents and family can never be replaced, but the house itself can be rebuilt. The bayhouse spirit of Kevin’s parents can still be passed along to their Grandchildren, Kevin and my sister’s three young children.
Trae and Kyle’s Apartment story, in Trae’s words:
My husband and I have lost everything in their Hoboken condo. We live(d) on a first floor unit in Hoboken and the place was entirely flooded during Sandy. It was hard enough seeing the home that we had worked so hard to purchase and make ours, all ruined in the storm. We have no idea how we are going to get through this, and before we can even begin to take steps in the right direction, we are forced to present legal issues on the building's hazardous conditions as a whole. We aren't even able to rebuild until that long process is over with. This is truly a case where we are in need. We are without a home, and we are doing the demo work now. Not only is it hard to toss all of our personal belongings in the trash, but additionally to have to literally tear our home apart is heart breaking. We move from place to place to survive. With all of the work of trashing what's left the place, we need to go to work every day, and struggle with the commute back and forth just to come and clean up.
