Sarah Jane Rhee hasn't added a story.
Stevie Wilson is a dear friend and penpal who is currently incarcerated in PA DOC. He is an organizer who leads abolitionist and transformative justice/restorative justice study groups at his facility. He and I talk almost every day, and I consider him a part of my family.
Recently, Stevie started facing what appears to be retaliation from his facility administration probably because of his support for another prisoner who had been attacked by a guard. He's basically been disappeared out of general population, transferred to a different facility, and was unable to communicate with his friends on the outside for several weeks. He was JUST allowed to start making phone calls in the past several days, but is very limited in the number of calls he can make, and he is still not able to access email communication, which was how he stayed in touch with many people on the outside.
I don't know when Stevie will be able to return to his original facility and to general population, but before he was moved to a different facility, we had been talking about fundraising during Black August for his study groups. Because he was disappeared for these past few weeks, we were unable to do that, but I still want to raise funds to ensure he will have money to make calls as well as for other needs he will have to care for himself on the inside. I also know that he will be eager to return to leading his study groups, and he uses so much of his own money for materials for that. Additionally, I want to have funds available for legal support in case he is targeted again in the future. Stevie is very dear to me, and I appreciate any support you can give. Thank you!
(All payments to this fundraiser will be seen by a group of Stevie's friends who have been supporting his organizing work.)
Stephen “Stevie” Wilson is a currently incarcerated Black, queer, writer, activist and student. For over two decades, he was active in the Ballroom/House community and worked as an HIV prevention specialist and community organizer. His work, writing and practice inherit teachings from prison abolition, transformative and racial justice, Black Feminist theory, and queeration. He works to expose and dismantle the PIC and to build a world in which we deal with harm without caging and exiling people. He desires a transformation in our society, in our world, and believes that art, especially storytelling, plays a critical role in bringing about that transformation because art is not just a mirror of who we are, but also a forecast of what we can be. Stevie’s writing focuses on those who live on the margins and in the interstices of our society, and it is within these populations that he has discovered the most profound and imaginative presentations of freedom, community and humanity. It is upon the margins and in the interstices of our society that he finds that the starkness of who we are and the possibility of what we can be are most evident. Stevie is a member of Black & Pink and Sylvia Rivera Law Project’s Prisoner Advisory Council.
